My 02 maxima has a line of rust (like 1in high, 2in across and then like 1in high 4 or 5inches across) above my back right tire and I went to autozone to see if they had anything that i could apply to it to maybe slow the process down without having to dish out a lot of money. They gave me rust-oleum rust reformer ($6.50) and he told me that he uses it on his cars and that it does something to the rust and turns it black and then you can paint over it. I dont know about flaky rust spots (it says to brush them off first) but does that stuff sound like its worth a try?

if you're familiar with body work I'd say go for it, also squirrles rust was minimal compared to what it could be.

 

Thats a great thread, but that method is only usefull if you catch the rust early and fix it right away .

Got rust hole in drvr side wheel well bottom, forward of the tire, hole into the rocker panel. The top and bottom portions rusted thru from dang salt sitting there, even though I rinse it almost daily....but it is a '00.

What I need is help on which way to go, CHEAP, that will fill the holes. I am not concerned w/ looks....only function. I need it sealed to prevent water inside the rocker panel. Then, I will spray the living daylights inside and outside of it w/ Fluid Film which will keep the rust at bay. But, I don't want rust creeping thru from the inside of my patch job, either..what to do? Help, please.

I need a "how-to" or solid direction on how to proceed. I have and have used POR15 for other things w/ great results. But this is a hole , not surface rust. Never done this sort of thing but I have to get it fixed. Had no idea it was a hole until this Spring...dang salt....

Seen a couple of videos on using fiberglass cloth and fiberglass resin to fill similar holes...is this the way I should go?

keep in mind expand-a-foam is known to collect moisture.

 

I am exploring all options because rust is becoming an issue on my 01

 

don't forget you can get that rust converter stuff, maybe that might help a little bit in the mean while.
