Quote: How about if Scottwax sent you a Turbo Muffler with a 3" inlet and your fabricator set it up for your 3" catback...That sounds fair Brian!!!! It's very possible!
Or is there a way to just get the tubing? I know there wouldn't be any guarantee on anything but the actual tubing being in usable condition but there is a very good muffler shop that builds hi-po exhausts who could set me up with a resonator and muffler that would still flow well enough to make it all worth it and keep away the dreaded freeway drone.

Kudos to Brian and Scott. This is how GROWN MEN share differences of opinions and beliefs. Not once were there any name calling or off topic talk about things that dont matter. Just refreshing to know that there's still hope for this forum. Thanks guys

Ahem... Well, it isn't a matter of fairness, its one of practicality. Anything is possible in theory, but let me describe what is possible in practice.

If this muffler can has exactly the same external dimensions as the muffler can we use now (not just the size and configuration of the muffler case, but the positions of the incoming tubing and outgoing tips), it will fit in the manufacturing fixture we use and all we have to do is make the part and see how it sounds and performs. That would illustrate "possible in theory".

However, the possibility of that being the case is very small, meaning that we're back to standing under a car on a lift and starting more or or less from scratch. I do not have an interest in spending the resources (at least $1000) to do this on an experimental basis. I understand that this sounds like a great experiment, but you guys need to understand that at my end of things, every moment of time (except mine!) and every physical object that goes into it has a price tag.

If someone is real gung-ho to try this out, then find an excellent exhaust shop that can do a good job without butchering up the rest of the exhaust, buy a muffler and have it custom installed. Do a properly structured before and after dyno evaluation (if you want to know what protocols need to be followed for the before and after results to be comparable instead of absolutely worthless like most dyno "comparisons" are, check with me). If the muffler isn't an exact match for the one we make (so it can drop into the fixture) - and I can tell you without a doubt that it won't be - this is what we'd have to do too. Hundreds and hundreds of $s. Now we're talking "fair"...

Show me that it works - in terms of acceptable sound without losing significant horsepower - and I'll do my part (taking them into production).

Gentlemen, I think Brain was fairer than most companies would have been by even responding to you.

Ok you actually made a really good point in which I've stated before.......! The 3 " rear muffler assy is a 2 piece design....that slip fit piping should make it easy as hell for any reputable exhaust shop to install any muffler you choose.....Just build it to fit the slip joint and clear the rear axle matrix...pretty much any muffler you want to use!!!

Quote: Unfortunately, I would be, based on some of the in-car videos I have seen of the new 3" exhaust.

I don't mind a deep idle and I think my car is a bit too quiet at full throttle but I do like the quiet at road trips speeds.

I'll be going through Arizona in the fall, maybe I can stop by and hear the exhaust in person at Brian's company.
I have a Cattman 3" exhaust on my 4th gen, you are more than welcome to stop by and have a listen. I know its not exactly the same as the 5th gen 3", but I'm just throwing it out there.

Just to be clear is the 15-18 hp gain from the 3" exhaust from just the cattman cat back system or from the headers to the tail pipe?
Jan 3, 2013 | 10:23 PM
  #56
That's from the catback exhaust. Add the header/y-pipe set and you'll pick up 35-40whp total.

EIGHT ORDERS SO FAR, ONLY NEED 6 MORE TO BEGIN PRODUCTION!

This is a real old thread that has been resurrected. There are much more current threads about this system that include information on the larger resonator we'll be developing for the next production run.
