I have the 3" cattman with resonator included, but I also welded in an extra 14"x4" SS (with SS sound material) magnaflow resonator in place of the test pipe. I believe "total length" was something like 18". It didn't get too much quieter, but mostly smoother and got rid of remaining rasp.

Yeah without headers you can't really compare... They increase volume, rasp, and the pitch of the exhaust note a lot.

I am just guessing if you don't have a resonator at all that it has some horrid rasp. A resonator will quiet it down some, but most importantly remove a lot of rasp. I would probably aim for a 24-26" resonator if I was only going to use one.

Cattman Headers/Y-pipe, 2 14" resonators and a straight pipe. It was insanely loud, but everybody made comments about how exotic it sounded. Overall I am much happier with my cattman 3" + 2 resonators. Now everybody makes comments about how quiet it is... lol.

Not as loud as the open headers/y-pipe I ran while I was waiting for my 3" catback . You've done that too at the track, right sparks?

+1... If he has no resonator, it will help a bit though imo. Especially one of the 5" or 6" body resonators with more sound deadening material.

It could help a little bit. I have a 14" and 20" resonator on my 3" exhaust on top of the giant cattman muffler.

However, you will be able to quieten it up much more with a muffler... what are you using now?

Size? By turbo muffler are you saying it's not straight through? As far as I know, they only make straight through mufflers. The size and design can make a huge impact on sound, though.

http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/02muffler.asp

For comparison, this is the muffler that Cattman uses. It's huge... Don't have exact specs, but it's much longer than the normal magnaflow 14" and definitely keeps the noise down.

You can probably make it extremely quiet with a 3" walker quiet flow... Something like this one from summit

I have a custom 3" with headers and it's all straight pipe back to a borla. Can't stand the loudness in the car anymore lol I think I'm gonna grab an 18-24in resonator and I was thinking 6" round. Sparks, that will still fit under the car, right? I'm hoping it won't be too quiet after the resonator.

These are replica mufflers originally an option for 69-70 Pontiac GTO's. Just thought I'd throw the idea out there. They're vacuum operated and go from quiet to loud. I am thinking about buying one and having it installed. Just trying to figure out how and where to run and hook up the vac line for it.

I don't know about 6"... that is going to be VERY close to the sides of the tunnel. I can tell you with 100% certainty that it won't fit with stock heat shields in place, and give you a "maybe" without them. A 4" is a sure thing, 5" you can probably get away with also.

Similar to the Dynomax VT, but it uses exhaust pressure instead of a vacuum line, much simpler.

You may actually want to try the dynomax VT. It is supposed to be dead quiet at idle/low throttle, then get as loud as any other muffler at WOT. That 14" magnaflow is a loud muffler for sure.

So you think a 5" would fit ok with the heat shields there? You seems to be the guru when it comes to exhausts on the 5.5gen lol I just don't want to order a 5" and be pissed it won't fit under there right.

I've only went through about 15 (literally) different exhaust setups. Don't even want to think about the wasted money at this point.

You should stick with 4" if you're keeping the heat shields. I would recommend getting rid of the heat shields and using some of the stick-on heat shield material if you still want it in order to fit a 5" one. The extra inch will probably make a big difference in sound deadening ability.

If you look at my first post in this thread, you can see I even have a modified cross brace to fit the 4" one in place of the test pipe. A 5" one would fit in place of the cattman one behind it, though.

What would be a good stick on material? And yeah, I remember seeing the cross brace in another thread a while back. I can't imagine a good shop couldn't do that but I like being low and the cross brace gets hit pretty good as it is lol

I don't really know, I don't have any heat shielding at all there. Should be pretty easy to google it up though.

I guess the real question is do you really need it? I mean, it's there for a reason but it might not be necessary. Do you feel it makes a difference to anything?

EDIT: Also sparks, any brands of resonators that are better than others? Any to definitely avoid?

The only difference it makes is a little bit less heat in the interior and more sound isolation from the exhaust. I did just mention I don't have any. Haven't for 2 years now.

Only use resonators that have the stainless steel sound material... Any type of glasspack will eventually burn out and turn into a hollow can that can sometimes make the car louder.

Ah ok, thanks for the info. I am checking summit now (good place to look for resonators?) but I don't seem to be finding alot of resonators. I see alot more round mufflers, but I don't know that I would want a muffler instead of a resonator, would I?

Hmm, OK. I thought a muffler might have more packing in it than a resonator. Atleast on summit's site, they are 2 different products.

EDIT: Ughhhh, can't find any round mufflers near a 20" size with the SS material in it in 4" round. Got any leftover resonators, sparks? lol

EDIT 2: I guess you don't think this is good because it's a glasspack, right? I've always loved magnaflow's stuff though...

This message goes to Spideymon....."If you do find a 3" Quietflow muffler have the muffler shop copy the rear muffler section (the top picture) they shouldn't have to cut a thing on your Cattman system!
