It's been 4 weeks since swapping in MT-85, replacing two years and only 10K miles of Redline MT-90. I'm sure the MT-90 was fine... that wasn't the point. I wanted an improvement with the new mix. And for the first few weeks, that felt like the case. The New Normal was a welcome, although certainly not dramatic change.

But since then, the outside temperatures are getting nicer. We're seeing more and more days over 70 degrees. And somehow I've been feeling like the car is changing again. There's a more smooth transition in gears, the way it rolls off a gear at high revs rather than snaps out of gear... if that makes any sense.

In other words, I'm really, really liking the Redline MT-85.

Amsoil 75W90

I was actually liking the way my tranny shifted with factory fluid up to 70k miles (2003 SE). Then stupid Jiffy lube wanted to change the tranny fluid 'cause they said there were metal shavings in it when they checked it. I said yes and regretted it for a year. Cold shifting, even at only 50F temp outside, was TERRIBLE. Crunch.

Then I bought some Amsoil 75W90 GL4 (from the Amsoil website) as mentioned here, and changed it in myself. Holy Slickshift Batman. I cannot believe the difference. I highly recommend it. For me it's like having a new tranny.

Sweet man i think you will like it, It works well with the 6mt's and i tried it after the MT-90 because the G/Z guys had alot of positive things to say about it and it turned out to be the best that i tried out of 4 or 5 different kinds IMO of course.Let us know what you think.

MT-85 is GREAT...Did the change this weekend and shifts are phenomenal. Also did the free ($3?) STS mod and I'm in love all over again.

Next up, install the ES bushings into the shifter inside the car...already changed the bushing in the engine.

Bushings + STS + MT85 should be mandatory on all MT6 cars.

I suppose it all depends on how well the existing gear oil is drained.

Either way, you need to purchase 3 quarts.

Or buy a gallon and have 1 quart left over just in case. Last time I ordered from summit racing, a gallon was almost the same price as 3 quarts.

People who need a free hand for things that have nothing to do with actually driving.

You know who you are.

Think we should also thank Talltom because he was the one who first recommended MT-85 in the thread

Agreed. TallTom, you and 036mtmax each have my gratitude for pointing me towards MT-85 gear oil.

I don't know if I was the first one to recommend it, but thank you.

You'd also have a slower car. I've had both and after a 6MT, I didn't get another 5.5 gen because all I could find were automatics.

Why Not Try Redline MTL 70W80 GL-4 ???

Why not try the next step down in viscosity, if we're having so many cold shift problems? The Redline MTL 75W85 GL-4 seems so popular, but still not a perfect cure, they do sell a 70W80 product too:

I can't imagine it would damage anything. Or could it?

Just a quick note to let everyone here know how happy I am with Redline MT-85. I've been using it since August of last year and a bit over 12k miles now. It improved cold shifting immensely over the Amsoil I had in before. The best part? My 3rd gear crunch is about 95% gone. On that very rare occasion it does crunch into third, I've noticed if I pay attention and push the clutch hard to the floor on the next shift I don't have that problem so it might be me doing a lazy shift that caused the crunch anyway.

I would say if anything the MT-85 shifts better for me in cold weather than it does in very hot 90F+ weather. When it's really hot I've noticed it can take a bit more force than normal to get it into 1st. This only happens on the hottest of days after I've been driving for over 30 minutes though so it's not a big deal. Overall it's easily the best manual transmission fluid I've used so far.
