Upper Oil Pan Gasket: Need Advice

The leak between the motor and trans on my 01 gle is finally getting to the point i'm losing a quart between oil changes.

I am considering doing the upper oil pan gasket over a weekend once the weather gets better.

To the best of my knowledge the steps would be:
1. Jack up car and put on stands.
2. Support under trans.
3. remove center cross member
4. remove belts?
5. drop ac compressor
6. drain oil
7. remove oil pan
8. remove upper oil pan
9. clean mating surfaces
10. new RTV sealent
11. Install all in reverse order.

Is the above correct? Or do I need to take the car in and actually do the RMS?

Anyone done the upper oil pan gasket and know any additional tools I might need?

Thanks in advance.

Everything you have there looks pretty good. Make sure to grab the front and rear lip seals from the dealer (I used Southpoint). I don't think you have an oil cooler so I guess you won't have to get those seals. I replaced my RMS when I did mine, but I had the trans out and the flywheel off for a clutch change. The rear mains don't typically leak very much. It's usually the RTV and those lip seals.
As far as the mechanical stuff? Yes to everything there. Make sure to use a plastic tool to separate the aluminum. You definitely don't want to gouge it. I used a sharpened piece of phenolic on mine. I hung my compressor with zip ties so it was no longer attached to the pan but still hanging in the correct position and I didn't bend any refrigerant lines. Your y-pipe is going to have to be removed to allow you to clear the crank with the pan. Watch out for the oil. There will be a lot left in the lower pan even after you drain it. It sucks when the seal finally lets go and you pour oil all down your shoulder. Everything else looks right. Double check the FSM before you start.

^ very good pointers and i would also like to say you dont need to drop the compressor, just remove enough that you have clearance to insert a suitable tool to seperate the upper pan..

and if i was you i would use Permatex The Right Stuff instead of regular grey RTV..it is so much stronger and you will never need any more RTV after.

and make sure to TQ the bolts to specs ( IIRC they should be anywhere from 10-19 ft/lbs ) but i may be wrong so look it up
