Yea I know what the F.

I know my tank is full of gas. And it only happenes sometimes. The car starts fine, the needle will go the F, so I drive it down the road and sometimes the needle will then fall (slowly) to E and then the car has no power. It will idle fine but when you try to give it gas it just bogs. But if I slam on the brakes it seems to go back to normal driving the gas needle goes back to F and so on. It has done this about dozen times in the last 6 months. It will do it with a half tank or full it doesn`t matter how much gas is in it.

Any help guys anyone heard of this going on.

is it possible the ECM takes the info from the fuel sending unit?

for example, the ecm takes the info from the fuel sender to determine how much fuel to pump, and since the sender may be bad giving a false reading, when it reads E the ECM thinks its low on gas and pulls back voltage to the pump ..

just a thought since nowadays cars are electrically controlled

that is the problem, when you slam on the brakes the float on the sending unit raises the ecu then thinks "hey everythings peachy" back to green flag racing then the float gets logged with fuel and sinks like a rock

I used to work at Biggers Mitsubishi on 58 , i used to live in Carpentersville before i moved to Florida...

Could be debris in the fuel tank.

Makes sense and all, I never heard of this happening to anyother max, any year. I mean my car only has about 48,000 miles on it, but I guess with it being electrically controlled there is no time frame for this going bad. And it doesn`t do it all the time. I would think if the ECM is bad, it would do it all the time. ???

I would second the fuel pump is heading further south than where you currently live, as it is not sending information accurately to the ECU
