I wanted to see what kind of gas mileage i would get when driving conservative. Started from school in south Jersey and went 140 miles north. Ended up getting just over 28mpg. I was quite amazed to say the least.
This was on 93 octane gas, and autotragic trans. Averaged about 70mph on the highway +/- 2. With a few highway pulls
I know the trip was mostly highway but i was still speechless. With winter grade gas and auto trans.

 

Cool story, its always nice to see what the car can do. I've hit 31 on a pure highway cruise, with my 5 speed and Chevron premium, stuck at around 60 due to traffic/weather.

 

Is that based on the onboard MPG readout, or by filling the tank up before the trip and then again at the end of the trip and calculating it by hand?

 

Also curious on this.

Yeah, I've seen as high as 39 mpg from the on-board computer, granted that was when I actually got 33 mpg. If you want an even more accurate figure, try to drive a longer distance (i.e. full tank). When the car displays 28 mpg, I am more often in the neighborhood of 24-25 mpg. Interested in your actual figures.

 

i've gotten as high as 29mpg...manual calculations and as low as 21...i'm averaging right now about 22-23 mpg...mainly because i know my spark plugs are toast and i need to swap out my rear coilpacks

 

i get about 500km to a tank with my 3.5 6speed. the light came on last night at 460km... and i pay $80-$85 to fill up in Ottawa on 91 octane

 

Damn I hope that is less in US currency than Canadian....

My onboard MPG computer reads almost exactly 4mpg too high.

If I don't reset if for a couple of tanks, it will average out to about 31mpg, but the car is really getting 25-27 mpg. I always reset my trip odometer every fill-up and calc my mileage.

Yeah my on board read out as 3 mpg too high from my calculations. I've gotten as high as 28 with two people and full car and as low as 18 with one person, lol.

This time of year my mpg's tend to suck bc I use the remote start alot.

 

*****. I read these threads and just get frustrated because I can't figure out why my fuel economy is so terrible. Since June of 2010, after 7,008 miles of driving, my average is 20.3, with my low being a shocking 17.7 this past tank of pure city and the high being a terrible 22.4 mixed.

I've had an obnoxious EVAP leak from the canister's purge valve and swapped canister and valve for one pulled off a junked Maxima (weight dropped from ~6 lbs on the canister on my car to ~2 lb for the junkyard one! Guess the last owner of my car was a serious topper), but I guess it'll take a few weeks of driving before I can figure out if that helps fuel economy. My new 225/50 tires didn't so much as flicker the numbers, guess that stems from using such terrible, awful 245/45s before.

My OEM-style NGKs have roughly 9K miles on them, the fuel filter about 5K. Maybe the 0W-40 Mobil1 is hampering the economy a bit? Maybe the added protection isn't worth a drop in fuel economy. That seems like a stretch, though. =/

Coasting in gear versus shifting into neutral hasn't done a darn thing to improve my figures, either. Bah.

 

For mine.. Subtracting 4 from the readout is overall a pretty good average.

Wow dude, you must drive hard or a buttload of city. I get at worst 630km per 75$ fill. cpu currently reads 8.1 L/100km

 

I typically get 575km - 600km with more or less 50-50 driving city & Hwy current cpu reading is 9.2 L/100km which I don't feel is to bad for an automatic and given the colder temperatures during the summer months I will commonly see the cpu registering 8.3 to 8.6 L/100km

 

No idea why my maxima is just drinking gas. No check engine lights, I've replaced plugs, maf, o2 sensors, fuel filter, air filter and a few other things.....12 mpg city, 16-18 highway. I'm thinking my precats and cat could be clogged like crazy as the only other thing even though I'm only at 85k =/

Maybe someone is stealing my gas at night.

Haven't really replaced anything. I've been getting around 14-15 city around 22 highway. I have a 6 Speed and I try VERY hard to keep it under 3k rpm.

 

Where do you go to school? I go to Rowan.

 

I bet Ive read 100 posts from people in NY that get really horrible mileage.. Not sure whats in the gas or air out there but you better get used to it.

Thats actually really good, I've pretty much maxxed out at 600km doing 90% highway. Probably due to alot of different, costly, reasons though...

No, a hole in the exhaust would be noisy but would not hurt gas mileage.

I can get 220 miles before the car hits the 1/2 mark, you have something you need to deal with.

 

Around here (Dallas-Fort Worth area) if you do mostly city driving, you get horrible mileage. The idiot traffic engineers can't seem how to synchronize the lights so you don't stop at every single damn one of them. I was getting a consistent 3 mpg better in the city when I was out in Phoenix because they time the lights a lot better.

Probably be a couple weeks before I really know what my new (to me) 6 speed '02 gets, having too much fun banging gears right now.

 

No, i've recently developed a small exhaust leak (sounds mean, lol) and it's not affected the mileage, just filled up- 62L got me 660 km 60/40 hwy/city. last summer on a 90% hwy tank i got 810km, and down to 7.5l/100k! though I coasted into the Esso on fumes lol. 6th gear and cruise control are your friends.
I find with the timing advance (thanks Knight yyz) that you rarely have to shift over 2000rpm.

 

I reset the tripo every single time I fill up. My last 5spd 4th gen would get about 320 miles per tank, even driving very aggressively. Now my first full week with the new 5.5 gen and scared I'm looking at about 17.5 mpg city/hwy mixed. I drive fairly conservatively on back roads, but do pass people at least 3-4 times a day, and highway is a constant 80 mph at about 2600 rpm (not bad I thought), but I really was hoping for a minimum of 20 mpg. I put 55 bux on Tues (full) and down to an 1/8 tank already. 93 octane only

 

I always manage to get at least 400 miles on a tank; and that's with about 70% hwy/30% city driving. If drive about 80-90% hwy, I can get up to 440 miles on a tank. I use 93 octane.

Aggressive driving and speeds over 70mph will kill you mileage.

Easy way to check; next time you on a nice flat freeway, reset your MPG computer and do 2 miles at 65mph with the cruise control on.

Reset again and do 2 miles at 80mph... yeah, there will be a pretty noticeable difference. And if you like to shift over 2600rpms doing city driving, you will lose a couple of miles per gallon compared to shifting at 2200 when you are on the straight and level roads.

 

I would put my money on some very lazy (need to replace) o2 sensors, and perhaps a clogged cat for your mileage to get this bad.

 

I totally forgot to put 91 in our new to us Max... It's been a while, I used to have a 96 and now we have a 2000 which I am assuming still needs high octane?
