Shifter Button Problem

I have a problem with the button on my shifter in my 00' GLE. The shifter button doesn't work about 70% of the time. The button won't push in and let me shift out of park. It won't go in all the way until I either jiggle it around for a good 20 times or be forced to stick something in the little shift lock release.
I don't know how the mechanics behind the brake engaged/button to release the shifter works exactly...anyone have any ideas?

pop the button out, sounds like the spring may be bent/out of line

Removed screws, popped out button, cleaned goop off spring and inside button, no cigar Didn't look bent or out of the ordinary
