TunerMax 5th Gen to 5.5 Headlight Conversion Hook-UP Guide & DIY

I'll be Editing this once the DIY is complete. For now I'm only including the Hook-Up Guide portion.

Once this is a complete DIY with Hook-Up guide, It needs to get stickied, so please keep the comments ON TOPIC, and let's get this thing stickied for everyone, Thanks.

I am 98% sure of this set up for ALL years listed, there can be no confusion with my Guide, because it does NOT rely on colour codes. The colour codes change between years so DO NOT rely on them.
You want to hook up according to TERMINALS. The terminal designations are the same for 2000/2001, and for 2002/2003.

This set up WILL work on Canadian OR US models, DRL or not.

Just follow the terminal designations I've provided and you'll be fine.

Here is the Complete hook up guide:

2000/2001 --------------- Headlights ---------------- 2002/2003

-------------------------
Terminal 3 R--------------------------------Terminal 4 R (high beam)
Terminal 3 R--------------------------------Terminal 1 R (low /HID)
Terminal 1 R--------------------------------Terminal 5 R
Terminal 3 L--------------------------------Terminal 4 L
Terminal 3 L--------------------------------Terminal 1 L
Terminal 2 L--------------------------------Terminal 2 L (ground supply low beam)
Terminal 2 R--------------------------------Terminal 2 R (ground supply Low Beam)
Terminal 1 L--------------------------------Terminal 5 L

----------------------Marker/Parking------------------

------------------------------

Terminal 1 (coloured)----------------------Terminal 3 (red/yellow[coloured]) Positive
Terminal 2 (black)-------------------------Terminal 2 (black/yellow[black]) Ground

--------------------------Signals-------------------------

-----------------------------

Terminal 3 L (g/b [coloured] +)----------------Terminal 1 L (g/b [coloured] +)
Terminal 2 L (black -) --------------------------Terminal 2 L (black -)
Terminal 3 R (g/y [coloured] +)----------------Terminal 1 R (g/y [coloured] +
Terminal 2 R (black -) --------------------------Terminal 2 R (black -)

These are the relevant power-flow wiring diagrams, for clarification of the above Guide, should you need it:

2000 headlights DRL CANADA:

2000 Headlights USA:

2000 Parking Lamp in Headlight:

2000 Signals in headlamp (same E24/E45 harness as parking):

2003 Headlights DRL Canada:

2003 Headlights USA:

2003 Parking lights in Headlight (same E161/E165 connector as Headlights):

2003 Signal in headlight (different harness from parking lights):

Here is a pic to show you guys what harnesses you need. This is a temporary post until I complete the DIY portion.

The harnesses circled in RED are NOT necessary, they plug into the ballasts, and SHOULD be included with your headlights. If you bought aftermarket headlights with OEM ballasts, you will need them. If you bought aftermarket headlights with aftermarket ballasts, you'll need just the marker light harness (generic, but OEM is recommended).

Note, you WILL NEED bulbs of course, but they are NOT part of the harness, you can purchase them separately (for the noobs that aren't sure), marker light type is 168.

This is what you need for harnesses:

2 - HID harnesses
2 - High Beam Harnesses (Bulb type is 9005)
2 - Signal Harnesses (Bulb type is 7440)

Dumb question: when you installed did you go directly into the 00-01 harness or did you use the wiring kit from DaveB?

Good job btw

Contrary to popular belief, Dave B does not have a 'kit'.
He sells the 6 pigtail harnesses and 2 clips. You can junkyard hunt for those parts. Dave B sells the whole works new for around $55-60 though, not a bad price at all. You need to splice in on the 2000/2001 side regardless.

I used the harnesses off a 2003 (all 6).

EDIT: Just want to note, you can buy the marker light (if needed) and High beam harnesses from any part store, they're generic, OEM IS recommended though, they are a much better harness. The HID harnesses MUST be from the dealer, unless you want to hardwire (not recommended). And the 2 clips can be purchased from the dealer for less than $10 for the pair (hard to believe they're so cheap).
Just something to consider, I hope those overlooked facts don't rob Dave B. of his 'kit' sales, he's a great guy and has amazing deals. I just think it's important to share the knowledge that you don't HAVE to spend that extra money, especially when this swap can cost over $500 before you buy bulbs or harnesses.

My saying 'kit' was just a reference. I would figure most folks would know they're harnesses

I definitely wouldn't junkyard hunt for such parts b/c new isn't a wallet-stopper like you said.

Very nice work on searching man. I am hoping to complete the DIY section by the end of next weekend, I'm doing the swap on a friends car, sorry for the delay guys.
I have had a couple guys ask me this already, so in the meantime I will use Post #2 to show you the harnesses you need.
Please scroll back up to that post, if you still have questions feel free to ask.

Thanks guys. I appreciate all the help. Just picked up a set of three piece racing hart c-5's with toyo rubber for my max....they should look nice with the light silver blue color.

Are these terminal designations from the front of the plugs where you would plug it into the lights or from the back of the plugs where the wires are pinned into the connectors?

might be worth a read.

http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...gentlemen.html

They fit they're just a bit of a pain to get in there, even on the 5.5 gen they're a bit of a pain.

I am in the middle of this and I am confused on the 02/03 high beam plug. Which terminal is 4 and which is 5, in realation to the way it plugs into the bulb? Since it does not have a release clip like the others I am confused as to which was is up. Can anyone clarify this?

*Also, thanks for doing this write up*

There IS a release clip. Maybe yours are broken?

And if you don't have DRLs, it may not actually matter which way you hook it up. But I advise the way I mentioned.

My clips are brand new from DaveB, they don't look to be broken.

So the release clip is pointing "up"? When it's plugged into the high beam bulb the pointy nub will be pointing "up"?

Also, these headlights are new to me....I don't know what DRL stands for

Clip is up. As shown in picture. so if it's disconnected and you're looking at the harness, the clip is on the top, then terminal #4 is on your left.

Do the grounds need to be shared? There are enough of them to hook one wire to the other, rather than hooking them all together.

I am bringing this thread back up again.. seeking to get some support from members on the board.

I will be ordering this harness to go with the headlight conversion. Is this the correct harness to get?

http://www.nissanpartszone.com/parts...009-5y700.html

Also in process in picking up the headlights this week. Let me know!

I have no idea from that picture or site, and the link you posted only shows a part number.

Left and right are different though if you're getting the OEM ones.

Hi I just got my maxima 2000 a week ago and looking to do the conversion.

All the info about the conversion is a bit confusing. I'm just getting into maxima's.

From what i've read you need the headlights, wiring harness and the clips.

I see this guy selling a harness that he saids is a plug & play so it doesnt require any splicing.

http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...t-5th-gen.html

is this true ?

im planning on getting OEM 02-03 headlights. I'll most likely do the 02-03 bumper later down the road.

If you want something plug and play, that will work. Personally I don't like to see Electrical tape on the connections. I have no idea how that was connected.

Also that will only work on the US car without daytime running lights.

I hate to revive this ****, but I am STUCK!!! I tried this several times 5 dif ways!

Is there any dumber DIY for this crap with good actual images maybe? Or someone has some maybe?

So far I have done it this way, blew a fuse immediately, tried it the cardomain way with the half *** images and blew another fuse... lol

Tried it some other way and well everything works... BUT my park lights are the HIDs... lol

And the actually park light comes on when I turn it to headlights...? wtf!

So I know I have 2 wires wrong just dunno which one it is!

Suggestions anyone?

When looking at the pictures of the harnesses, you are looking at the disconnected end. Not the wire end.

It's really simple, actually.

To make sure, When you have it listed as L headlight or R headlight is this as L Pass and R Driver?

Or L Driver and R Pass?

LEFT AND RIGHT directions are always assuming you are sitting in the driver seat.

That makes:
LEFT = DRIVER
RIGHT = PASSENGER

Sorry for that confusion.

Alright, got everything working thanks OP.

Just got one more issue... My driver side works perfect all of it, however, not the same story as the passenger one. Turn on and everything works but once I hit high beams the HID and park light turns off and once I let go everything comes back on like normal... any ideas org? This ONLY happens on the passenger side not driver.

Are you sure? even the park light turns off also when high beam is hit?

Passenger Side - When lights are turned on everything works as it should but once I hit the highbeams the HID and park light turns off and high beam turns on... thats normal? I think not honestly.

Driver Side - When lights are turned on everything works, once I hit highbeam everything stays on with the addition of the highbeam coming on. To me thats normal maybe?
