well fellow maxima owners, as you all know the maxima has a crappy design for the high pressure power steering line. well what i did was delete the whole power steering in itself. .the way i deleted it was i first drained the fluid from the unit. took the belt off for the powersteering, and then took all the lines off. then i made this line for the rack for the feed and return......i more or less just routed it back into the rack. then before i put my new line in the rack i filled the rack with powers steering fluid. the i put my new line on. so far im a week into it and i got to admit, at first it was a huge pita to turn in the parking lots and such, but now its a lot better, cause since i live in the mountains i got alot of curves so it was a work out where ever i went......but now its gotten alot better.....gotta say i really dont miss it at this point bye bye crappy power steering

basically its the feed and return line ends off a spare maxima rack i had laying around, and some transmission cooler lines with small little couplers

 

That's certainly one way to do it. Although, I would hate to steer this boat through the tight corners of a parking garage everyday. Highway driving win, city driving fail?

 

 

Did the same thing to a Chevelle I had. Took a few days to get used to the extra effort, after that I was fine with it.

 

interested if you also notice a slight increase in fuel economy...

 

yeah after the third or forth day i dont even notice any huge differences between this setup and the powersteering.

after a day or so your arms will get used to it, after that it aint that big of a deal....so far i say win

ill let you know on fuel economy numbers here shortly......i did notice that i did go a lot further on my 1/4 tank full than before though

 

I'm failing to see how removing a couple pounds from the power steering system would result in any kind of concrete fuel economy improvements.

yeah actually i got a good improvement in the fuel economy, but if i decide the car i will either tell the owner to suck it up or ill just put the powersteering back on, wasnt hard to take off, should be just as easier puttin on.but yeah, im lovin it so far, i got a better feel for the road now.

I never even considered gains from removing the pump because removing one belt that powers one small pump has got to result in infinitesimal improvements.



I can't tell if that's sarcasm or not. Electric engine fans, absolutely. Electric power steering?

300 miles per tank to 310 miles per tank? 20 to 20.5 miles per gallon? Shoot, troop's right; that crazy inefficient AC compressor has got to go, man! Then you might as well ditch that power-hungry alternator, too. Think of how much more in tune with your car you'll be after the alternator's gone! The next stop would be equally obvious: FOUR WHEELS!? FOUR!? Let's start knocking that number down. Rolling resistance will have a TREMENDOUS drop!!!

 

Infinitesimal? Probably, yes. I'm guessing the PS pump only creates resistance when the PS is in use, but I really have no freaking idea... that's just a guess. Either way, a fractional HP and mileage increase is possible. Same goes for electronically disengaging your alternator.

Alternator shut-off switches are not uncommon for that very reason.

I... What!? I couldn't have put more bile and sarcasm into my response, but people seriously "disengage" their alternators!? An alternator shut-off switch? Why are people so crazy?

Or, wait, we're only talking about drag racers though, right? I can't even imagine a guy like Sparks disconnecting his alternator for a race, but I guess some people out there at a higher level, or racing for money..? Wow. Car people are nuts.

Personally, I feel that removing systems from your car is something that should only be done by people looking to shave time off autocross runs or at the strip. Deleting power steering on a big, heavy, incredibly Crown-Vic-like sedan is not... a worthwhile improvement.

the whole point in me removing my ps in the first place was because i was tired of spending 15 bucks a week on powersteering fluid, plus i didnt want to replace my power steering line for a second time, so i just went ahead and removed it......im two weeks into it and i dont even miss it one bit, and i dont regret taking it off one but now....even the parking lots aren't a problem anymore

 

It's pretty commonplace nowadays... In theory, you get the best of both worlds: no parasitic power loss because either an electric motor is driving the power steering pump, or the electric motor directly assists with steering, and you still get the benefits of power steering.

S2000s had EPS and they still had great steering feel too.

 

yeah but if the eps goes then ur ****ed, but yeah no ps ftw maybe nxt time i pull the motor i may do a ac delete with light weight pulleys, but that happen untill i get my headers, flywheel and clutch......been thinkin bout takin the head off and having it machined some and get the valves worked on, the ill do some more porting to match my custom im ...but yeah im guessin ill be around 280-290 when im done
