Exhaust too LOUD!!!

I've been searching for the past 2 days and keep getting mixed feelings. This is the setup, cattman y-pipe, resonated test pipe, custom 2.5" b-pipe with resonator, and megan oers rear section. The exhaust is too loud not too raspy just too loud, I can't even start the car or drive down the street without all my neighbors looking at me. Since its my daily I hate how loud it is. How can I make it quieter? I want to decrease the noise at least 50% preferably more because right now it sounds like I have no muffler. Mind you I want to try and keep the megan exhaust since it would be a loss to me to have to get another exhaust and I don't have my stock. I've read about silencers, glasspacks, resonators, even replacing the resonator with a regular muffler but I don't know which route is effective and which one would make the noise the quietest. I'm willing to sacrifice some hp.

Just install a OEM muffler.

If you can find the AE muffler it has better flow qualities, without increasing noise hardly at all.

Should I just cut off the megan and weld on the muffler to keep the 2.5" piping? I really don't want to change out the megan I like the look but if its the only way then I have no choice I guess.

Put an oem cat or hfc on. Test pipes whether resonated or not add a good chunk of volume.

Either install a bigger resonator or like tuner said put the oem muffler back on. the oem muffler is not very restrictive at all so you will still see all the gains. you could get them to weld on the tips if you really like them.

If not I would def take it off your hands ha

Yea VQ but I'm afraid of spending the money on an oem cat and it still being loud, I kind of want it as close to stock sounding as possible maybe a little rumble is cool.

You'll need to have it welded up, the stock muffler has the pipe attatched to it, so cut the pipe in a location that is suitable for a flange mount. Weld a flange on and cut the Megan pipe to match, install a flange on it. Now you have a removable OEM muffler on your Megan Catback. And if you want, you can always swap back (just have to weld a flange on the megan muffler, or whatever other muffler you decide on.

I might just do that, I'm trying to see if one of my homies still has his stock exhaust and I'll sell you the megan muffler.

I think this is my best bet. You want to sell me your stock exhaust

I am using a Walker Quiet Flow with my Cattman exhaust. Nice tone, and no drone.

Nope, I quite like my stock exhaust. If I ever do anything to it, it'll be Y-Pipe and mandrel bent 2.5" with a big resonator to the stock AE muffler.

Just hit the wreckers, they won't charge you more than $15 if you take a hacksaw with you and cut it off yourself.

I actually have a stock catback in my garage if you wanted the muffler, I would let it go cheap.
but yeah i do think that would be your best bet and either get dual tips welded on or leave stock

Wouldn't it fit funny though since the oem is designed for 2.25" piping and I have 2.5" piping?

2.5" should slide right over the 2.25" acutally IIRC.

FYI OEM is not Standard, it's metric, they're close but not the same. It can screw you up if you're dealing with more precise stuff.

Noob question- the test pipe is the biggest sound maker right? It just sux a cat cost a decent penny when compared to a muffler

This 22" Magnaflow might quiet it down better than the Megan resonator.

Resonators will quiet it down, but the main thing they do on our cars is help eliminate rasp and change the tone of the exhaust.

OP says there's no rasp (or at least, he's happy with the current exhaust note), just wants it quieter

So resonator is a waste of time and money. Let a muffler do its job... to muffle!

This is easily the best and most reliable option to bring the volume down. Just about anything else (adding more resonators, cat) is going to turn into a money pit if it doesn't do what you want because of a loud muffler in the first place. Walker quiet flow is an after market option if you don't want to buy a stock muffler.

If you're keeping stock precats and a main cat in place, it probably won't be too loud. Most of the noise comes in once you get rid of all those cats.

The stock catback has been shown to support up to 247 whp, as has the OEM airbox (IIRC 249). So, going back to stock wont hurt.

When I had my headers installed on my car with everything stock (cat & catback) it sounded as quiet as ever, insane actually.

Well considering we've seen dyno gains of nearly 20whp going from a 2.5" straight exhaust to a 3" straight exhaust, I would guess there are some losses to be seen putting a 2.25" chambered muffler on the end of a 3" exhaust. Maybe not huge, but the OP did say he's ok with losses anyway.

Thanks for all your help guys I've purchased an oem exhaust, I am going to keep the rest of the setup y-pipe, test pipe, b-pipe etc and just getting the oem muffler welded on to the 2.5" piping this way IMO I will still see all the gains without the noise.

I've been saying that Megan's rear muffler (14"er) is way to small....go 5th Gen AE or regular rear muffler

, I did this with a Cattman Bpipe, Warpspeed HiFlo Cat, Cattman Headers, Oem rear section and it was awesome! Do this and add some 3" tips

The 'too loud you're too old' thing does NOT apply to your car's exhaust.
The only time that thing should be loud is when you stomp on it IMO. Idling around town or highway cruise should be quiet.

And dear god Sparks

What do I spy on blocks, is that a 240?

Ah that would have been a LOT of fun. My buddy is a RX-7 Nut. He has a friend with the LS in it, that thing is ridiculous Power to weight just blows my mind. His is a 91 I think though.

Anyways OT, but too bad you should have done it!

Yeah... 2600lbs and even a bolton LS1 can take you low 11s or high 10s with a perfect '60. There's a guy who has done mid 9s with a junkyard ~200 dollar 5.3 and a sub 2000 dollar single turbo build. Total cost of car, tires, engine, TC and all was below 10k. Of course he had fabrication skills and such for the cage/turbo piping... but wow.

Still, I'll probably regret it one day, but I'm doing the stupid thing and going for maxima records of some kind... Will get a cheap daily as a second car instead of the maxima being daily with another project car. At least that's what I'm aiming for at this point.

So your Maxi will be the project car. oh no, that means things are going to get downright serious. 300whp N/A should be coming up very very soon.

You really make me hate my DE-K. I was so happy with it until I started really reading around about all your dam 3.5 N/A BHP threads.

Personally, anything over 250 BHP is more than I'd ever need out of a DD sedan. If I wanted more, I'd have a sports car/light car as a second car. The price of fuel is high enough, I have a hard time justifying driving the STOCK V-6 tank around.

I'm still averaging around 24-25mpg doing 95% city stoplight to stoplight driving. Now after the round of changes coming up, that's going to change a lot. I'm shooting for the stars, 300whp should be exceeded by at least a few %age points if plans come to fruition. I'll just have to get a beater... maybe a B13 sentra or something, for the around town duties when the 5.5 is finished.

Wow, that's better mileage then I'm getting now.

I think it's common for the 3.5 to get better mileage though. And obviously, as long as your modifications are increasing efficiency, they will increase fuel mileage too. (until you stomp on it )

I hope my big tune up and the CAI this spring helps my mileage, it's killing me (around 17-20MPG average)

I'd expect the CAI to help a good bit, especially in slow moving/traffic conditions. Maybe less so with a lot of highway driving.

And yeah, I'm still getting roughly the same mileage I got stock. Pretty awesome.

I rarely if ever get on it around town with 35mph speed limits b/c it just results in tire roasting ($) and another chance of getting pulled over for something stupid. Just a couple of days ago, some dude in a turbo integra that lives down the street from me was trying to bait me into racing him, slowing down to like 20 then getting on it to around 50, making sure I could hear his BOV, then yelling at me out his window... The whole time I'm on cruise control at just below 40mph and ignoring him. 2 minutes later, he was getting pulled over and the cop didn't even look at me while doing it. And there's my justification for never getting on it.

^ Pretty good justification.

Although it was not needed, you track your car, so it makes sense to have the power even though you don't use it regularly.

I had something similar happen. Always nice to know that you made the right decision, even though it was SO DAM tempting to just light him up.
