Strange squealing from the front of the i30 - Problem AND solution!
OK... Been noticing this REALLY strange noise from the right front wheel. Not sure how long it's been doing this -- I just noticed it the other day when I was driving with the windows down for the first time this season.
A pulsing (once per wheel RPM) gentle metal scrape. Not a heavy scraping like bad pads on a soon-to-be-dead rotor though. Besides, the noise is always there. If it were brakes, it would change or maybe even go away when the brakes are applied.
It only happens when the weight is shifted to the right (during a left turn) much like a failed/failing wheel bearing. But there's no play in the wheel when I shake it.
Eh, it's nice out. Might as well jack it up and see what's inside.
So I take it apart. I'm looking. And I admire Nissan for their handywork and such tight tolerances between the rotor and this oddly placed dust shield.

Now hang on a minute....
Looks to me that the previous owner's mechanic didn't bend down that little tab on the squeal plate. Looks like it started to fall, and then the rotation of the rotor kept pulling it forward, pulling it forward.
NEVER heard of this one before!
