Help! Driveshaft won't come out

Sooooooo, I'm in the middle of a clutch replacement job. Have the FSM, done the exhaustive search thing, read every thread on clutch replacement I can find, but nothings is working.

The passenger side driveshaft will NOT come out, and I am pretty much stuck now. Not really sure where to go from here, so I guess I'm just looking for advice from the experts. I do have the drivers side driveshaft out, if that matters...

What am I missing?

Did you take the bolts out of the carrier bearing on the back of the block?

Errrrrrm, nope, sure didn't. THIS is the reason the FSM drives me nuts, the instructions aren't specific enough to be helpful for a learner like myself, dah.

We'll see how it goes getting those bolts out then

Sooooo...the bolts on the carrier bearing are out, but that sucker is NOT moving. Soaked it in PB blaster and will let sit for a bit, MN roads tend to rust everything out and it really doesn't seem like it's going to budge without some help.

Am I looking for the carrier barrier housing (name?) to separate? If so, how in the hell do I make that happen?

NO you want to remove the hanger/bracket with the driveshaft, then after removal, soak it with penetrating fluid for a few minutes and it will come apart. Then install it on the new driveshaft with antiseize, and reassemble.

You may need to 'pop' he circlip out of the tranny with a pry bar/screw driver afer you remove the bracket.

You sure you got all three bolts off? One of them is really hard to see.

If you doing a clutch and not replacing the axle. Just do what I did and remove the three bolts from the engine then pull the axle out far enough for it to be out of the way . With the bracket still attached to the axle it won't come through the opening in the frame.

Soooo, I've got the new clutch in, and didn't notice that the FSM says to replace the transaxle oil seals. I've talked to a few mechanic friends, some say it's necessary, some say it's not...did you guys all replace the oil seals when re-installing the driveshaft?

No. If it doesn't leak after you reinstall the axle, then don't worry about it.

If you take care when putting the axles back in you will be fine. Just do a visual to make sure they are not torn .
I just did my clutch last week and I didn't replace mine . No leakie leakie .

I replace them everytime I take an axle out. They are so cheap it pays to do them while you have the axle out then to have to take an axle out later on just to replace a leaky seal.

Ugh, this project is going to be the death of me (and would have been were it not for all of the awesome help here ).

Just spent about 4 hours trying to get the transmission back in, and it's a total no go. Used a floor jack, used an engine hoist + level, I just can't seem to maneuver around the passenger side axle and get enough clearance to get the tranny in. If it weren't for that i would have no issues I think. How do I get more clearance with the axle to get the tranny in?

Pull the axle out as far as it will go. I pulled it out till the block bracket hit the body of the car. Then kinda placed the end pointing up towards the top of the motor ( does this make sense to you?).
Then when I had the chain on the hoist I pulled the back end up higher to get the shifter tower past the frame rail . Once it was cleared I repositioned the engine hoist so the trans was straight and it went right in.
Hope this helps if not pm me and I respond back with my cell number to try to talk ya through.

Glad you got it in finally .
All I could think about during my install job was if the crank trigger was clocked correctly . I was relieved to hear it fire up!

Alright, so I finally have most everything back in. One snag in the process, it appears that I damaged a sensor in the process of installing the transmission. The view in the picture would be as you're looking at the transmission from the driver's side wheel well. The broken sensor is just above the larger rusted bolt. Anyone know what this sensor is for?

I can't see from the picture but it appears to be the back-up lamp switch .

That picture is way too small. From what I can see I also think it's the reverse switch harness.

I believe it is the reverse switch because in the FSM the back-up switch it just to the side of where the shifter tower is . that looks like what i am seeing in that picture .

Yeah, sorry about the size of the pic, took it with my cell and I can't seem to get it larger . Anyways, I think you guys are right, it's very near the shifter tower, would make sense that it's the reverse lamp switch. Just one more thing to replace
