Need Opinion, Fix Car or Sell it?

Hey there,
I recently put up a thread about me moving to California I have received a lot of great feedback but now I have bad news.

I recently got my engine replaced. Then just 2 days ago my car shut off on the highway while driving. When I first got the car back from the engine swap I was getting a misfire code then the car was fine. I drove it for about 2 weeks and this incident happened. I took it to the dealer and they said I need a new EGI Harness and some other harnesses to fix the car. Cost of repairs were about $5k (of course the stealership prices are no surprise) and that I would be more than the car is worth. Could this even be fixed else where? Could this have happened because they did something wrong during the engine swap?

I am leaving for California in 2 weeks. I don't know what to do? Should I just sell the car as is? Part out? Take it to California and part it out there? I just have no idea what to do and I would appreciate some help on this matter.

Sorry for the long post, I am in a rut right now. Thanks for your insight.

Who did the engine swap? Could they have damaged the harness?

God knows I'm fond of the Maxima, and you probably are too, OP. But it also reads like at this moment in your life, you need a reliable, cost-effective car.

Cut your losses and put the car behind you. You can always come back to an automotive hobby when things are more stable.

Damn that sucks did a shop do your swap if so they had to give you a warranty on the labor and if two days that happen obvious it was the shop or person who did the swap especially if everything was working before that....Good Luck though...and welcome to Cali....when you get here....Come on Vacation, Leave on Probation.....J/K.....

I appreciate your feedback. It seems like that might be my option.

I'm moving there for work. :-)

Have you not taken it back to the shop where the transplant was performed? If not "too" long ago, that's where I'd start. Although time is of the essence, since you're re-locating, it's worth a try.

Small world man, I'm a salesman at the dealer you took your car to! At least the vanity plate matches your user name...Your car's harneses are seriously messed up man. I would take the car back to whoever did your swap. They did a very sloppy job. But your car looks super clean and very tastefully modded. LOVE the factory navi! If there is anything I can do to help PM me. I'll see what i can do to help

that sucks man..........I feel so sorry for any Maxima in pain........Definitely return to the stupid shop and be firm . ask them to fix what they mess....And , if I were you , I wouldn't sell the car dirt-cheap,cause that's what the stealers would pay you .... I would take it with me to cali and see what would you do there...Probably one of the cali maxima people can help you there ..........Good luck.

Thank you all so much! I appreciate all your input! You guys are wonderful I will be calling them tomorrow! I would love to take to california if anything.

I took it to the original shop when the day the car shut off on me. Turns out i needed a new key so that shop couldn't do anything to try and fix the car without a working key. I then took it to the dealer to have them look at it and that when they told me what was wrong. I have not taken it back to the first shop since i got my new key cut cuz i have to get it towed there. This will be the 4 time i'm towing this car and it's getting ridiculous. But that will just have to be what i have to do to get her fixed.

Good lawd that car looks hot....like others have said, bring it back to the shop where the swap was performed and try to be polite, it goes a long way. Also, was there a warranty on the work? Most of places warranty their work for at least 30 days or longer.

If they're unwilling to work with you I'd consider contacting the Better Business Bureau and possibly contacting a lawyer.

OP, you are a fickle cat.

But it's also true that the heart does what the heart wants to do.

Good luck in whatever happens.

Sadly, that shop is a friend of mine's. I knew him from back in High School. I will definitely be talking to him about this issue. I just can't stand letting this car go, I've only had her for 8 months...just my luck huh?!

My only advice is have a pro install the harness please! There are auto electricians around, if you can find one locally that's prob who I would use. Likely won't be cheap but you saw what cheap gets you.... You should prob also have a mechanic check your friends work as far as the physical installation goes and make sure there aren't any loose motor mounts or problems with the union of transmission and engine, etc...

OK that sounds good Maxident. Where would I go about finding an auto electrician? I guess google would be a start. You're right. That was a mistake I won't soon make again. Sometimes friend's aren't always the best.

Let me make sure I have this right. Since this car doesn't start and the last people to actually work on it was my friend's shop (original place to do motor swap) and it's not working anymore I have the right to take it back to them correct? They "should" fix it correct? Thank you

I'll bet his intentions were good, but the outcome is in your lap.

Yes, he should fix it. Be nice about it, but be firm that you would be much happier if they remedied the issue.

I also agree with finding a local auto-electrician, although, I've seen some of their work that is not much better. Make sure it's someone who know's what they are doing and hopefully warranties the wiring they do.
Pay the money, because wiring something properly takes a long time, and if it doesn't take long, then it's probably a crappy job.

Ok. I am more than happy to pay the money as long as it's a stand up job and everything is done right. My only problem is finding that person that actually knows what they are doing.

If you got the harness I would definitely take it to a auto auto electrician to do the work for you like Maxident mentioned. They would know more about electronic side of the car then your HS buddy.

BTW: that is a very pretty face. What part of cali are you moving too? I live in the SF Bay area it would be nice to have another Maxima around.

Hey guys i'll be in out in Anaheim and working in Irvine. I look forward to meeting you guys. At this point it might be too much money to try to keep and fix. I am regrettably going to sell her as is and sell my aftermarket parts.

Everyone here as been so nice and helpful and I can't thank you guys enough for all your help. I hope to still come to your meets even after I sell the Max.

They looked at it and they're getting a P1612 code with is a failed communication between the ECM and IMMU. Diagnosis is going to cost more not to mention the parts as well. And i'm not sure if that's all it's going to take to get it running.
