So my buddy works at a dealership and is going to school somewhere for automotives (can't remember) but long story short, I am buring like 3 qts of oil in 2k miles and need to do something about it. He has a vq35 with a spun bearing at the shop that I can have for free and we are gonna rebuild it and do a swap. I have never done anything with the bottom end of a motor and he is in the middle of learning how now but together we are gonna make this work. I am planning on using everything stock in the bottom end with better rings to stop oil consumption and add some cams while we got it out of the car.

We should be starting next week. What you guys think? The way I see it, free motor, I cant lose. lol

Do you have any idea how much it is going to cost you to rebuild? I like the thought of rebuilding becuase you know everything is going to be ok ( if you know what you are doing and take your time) vs. a replacement that could have any number of issues. I just don't know about the cost for replacement parts.

Also what do you plan on changing out? You may want to change stuff like the water pump and whatever else is going to be a PITA once it's actually in the car.

Yes, I know what it will cost and I have the funds. We are going to take our time on it, theres no rush. I will use what ever parts are there and keep the rest as replacements

What rings are you going with?
What cams are you going with?
Will you be documenting as you go along with updates and pictures? This would be nice so we can see and perhaps you and he can determine why yours is such an oil burner. It's probably the rings, but still, be nice to know/reinforce the fact.
Since you're down there, will you be replacing the rod bolts? Seems like a good idea if you're upgrading cams.
What is the build date & mileage of your car?

Not sure yet but I will be when I see what I'm working with. Haven't looked into rings yet and IF I do cams they will be mild, nothing crazy. I most likly will be replacing rod bolts as well as anything else that needs/could use replacing. I'm starting when ever I get the motor (next week) and I got 80k miles.

Plan out exactly what you want to do and price it out now. Also talk to a couple machine shops to find out what kind of experience they have with Nissan motors.

Rebuilding your own engine can be a very rewarding experience, built a .030 over 350 for my old Chevelle. Take your time putting it back together, make sure you check all your clearances and you should end up with a decent motor.

Do you have any idea of particular parts your gonna use or upgrade?

I started planning a build as well and still have the parts list, prices, and everything but never pulled the trigger. So I am def looking forward to this

Well I am planning to keep the head all stock just clean it till it looks new. I will probably be keeping stock pistons with eagle rods with new bearings and crank. Along with that it will have a light weight crank pulley and flywheel. It should run about a grand. I lucked out with the free motor. I will post pics of the progress

Rod bearing. I'm still iffy on the cams. I know its a good idea but thats more money. The whole purpose of this is to have a motor that stops burning crazy oil and with some lighter parts and super clean internals I should gain some more power.

Good Luck on the build, and Damn only 80,000 miles and burning that much oil my engine died out at a little under 153 k said it was a Rod bearing or the seals or something didnt want to pay all that labor so I just got a 04 Engine....but if I was you I would check into the port matching.....that what my friend was going to bust for me but all my engine problems came at the wrong time....but good luck on your overhaul....engine build.

Good luck, Ive rebuilt my Mazda 626 2001 motor and transmission, took a lot of my time but the car ran so well afterwards. Not to mention the superior clutches that i used in the AT, made it shift silky smooth with synthetic ATF.
Its all about experience.

If I were you, if money wasnt a big deal, I would stroke the engine to 4.1L with a stroker kit...while you got the thing out and all....go all out....why put stock stuff back in when you have the opportunity to really power up the VQ? I'm planning on doing that anyway.....
