What do I do? Eulogy time
Today is a dark day. Realized that the max is past the point of no return. Needs far too much to keep going. $2000 in parts, and about 3 weekends of work, most of which I cannot do. What do I do? My 2000 se has 230K on her and only gonna get 700 on a trade in. My friend, ally and compatriot has been through everything with me. Brought me home from my wedding and both kids from the hospital. As I stare at her, I just can let her go to some a$$hole that won't treat her as I did. Taking suggestions...Over a cliff, flaming burial...viking style, or parade float aka "Animal House".

A spectacular death could hallmark the occasion with ceremony, honoring the service she granted you.
Explosions can be hard too coordinate and contain.
Off a cliff sounds good, but where can you find a cliff really?
Take the 700 and take the wife out for the best dinner you've ever had.

Its hard...the 2000 VQ was a good year..no oil burning/no chain chatter/smooth as silk/good on gas (I get 30MPG on highway). I know how you feel ...Have a 2000 I30 since new with only 80K miles. Wife says "get a new car its 11 years old"..can't find any reason to get rid of her (the car, wife too!).
But at over 200K miles and a list of things that need to be done as in your case...get a nice Z or maybe a used infiniti G...that way you keep it in the family and sort of honor the good times you had driving the max
Good luck

Look into her headlights and tell her you can't fix her. Seriously now, since you're not interested in wrenching it yourself, I'd say you should sell it. If it was me I'd rebuild it. With a little discipline it shouldn't be difficult to save up enough cash to fix it up gradually. To me that would be better than a loan on another car. If you were in Cali I'd consider buying it from you and fixing it up.

I understand his dilemma. It's hard to say goodbye to a car that allowed you the joy, pride of ownership and truly a partnership. She brought his new family home safe and never cried for much attention. He took care of her every need and she took care of him and his loved ones. I say rebuild. Make her stronger. Ask yourself this, how much will you love to make a car payment on something you probably won't be happy in, let alone love as much. So I say anything again, rebuild, and give her the love she gave you. Hell, I would keep her, bite the bullet get another car. It's 7 large you will get for her. That is not even tax, tag and title. In my eyes,700 is really chump change when it comes to a car.

But in general this thread is making me think about my own end game / exit strategy.

list of maintenance/repairs!!!???
When my Max reaches 250K, i'd rather rebuild the VQ30DEk!! In the time it takes you to buy parts, devote the weekends to the repairs, and rebuild/swap...you will have saved yourself a GRIP of $$$. I've been pricing out rebuild kits, I have started with an entire gasket set for the VQ30...a rebiuld and swap would be CHEAP compared to a car payment! Where did the $2000 cost come from??
