AT Check

after just 3 days of buying an 03 maxima SE (65k miles) I'm getting AT Check light blinking for about 8 seconds...Anyone have any experience with this? Tranny fluid looks like it can be filled a little...According to carfax it was flushed at around 20-30k miles...Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

The TCM (tranny control module) has detected a tranny fault. Find the links to the FSMs on this website.......there is self diagnostic info in the FSM, section AT. It might just pay you in the long run to head to a reputable shop/dealer for troubleshooting.

Thanks for the link I was having trouble finding it...I'm just getting frustrated considering I've only had the car a few days...Should I be expecting the worst?

Try reading in the AT section page 9 it appears to be indicating this is Fail Safe Mode (limp mode) when the TCM is running a check of the system. The checking proceedure starts on page 53 of the AT section ... You haven't mentioned that you are having any driving problems or if your SES light has come on.

Did you buy the car privately or from a dealership? if you bought it from a dealership I would head straight back to them and explain the occurrence and see what they will do about it

It appears to drive fine...Mayb a little lag as it shifts...It's hard for me to tell b/c im coming off driving 98 max 5 speed for 7 years so I havnt driven auto in a while...From a dealer, they gave me a one year engine/transmission warranty. But they dont do repairs there...

When do you see the A/T light blink? while driving or just when you go to start the car?

Sound like you purchased the car from a used car dealership, so the engine/transmission warranty they gave you is for a third party insurer, I would go to the dealership that you purchased the car from and insist that the warranty work if required be done at a qualified Nissan repair shop

i had the same happen at my old 03 max, it just needed some fluid topped off. But it could also mean a host of other faults, did you do the self diagnostics? what codes came up?

It's called GWC warranty...They said most places accept it so I'm gonna try my own mechanic first...and if there is a problem then go to the dealer with the problem so they dont try to screw me if I go to them first...

I didnt get a chance to run the diagnostic yet...

If it is only at start up then I would think it is just the TCM running its check on the system and as suggested above you mentioned that the fluid level might be down a little I would try to top it off first to see if the issue continues.

Mine comes on when I first turn the key to start, when the TCM runs its check and then goes out (mine might blink once or twice) but it happens very quickly which to me is a normal diagnostic function before starting up the car.

According to the cars manual it's supposed to come on for 2 seconds, if its around 8 seconds it says you should bring to dealership to be checked...I'm hoping its just the fluid...I think im going to drop off at mechanic in the morning so he can look over the car in full before contacting the dealership I purchased from...

Or use the FSM's posted in Ghost's sig, there it walks you through a diagnostic procedure.

I believe the diagnostic procedure starts on page 58 of the AT section, on page 9 of the AT section it describes your current issue ... give the procedure a try appears pretty straight forward

So I dropped car off at mechanic today and he found nothing to be wrong. He must've ran a diagnostic b/c he said no codes came up while looking for something. He drove the car and said it's shifting normally and smoothly. Also no leaks or anything to be concerned with. Although when I went to pick up the car the AT Check light started blinking again for 8-10 seconds....I may just bring it to where I got the car from while its still under their warranty and have them see if there's an issue...

The blinking 8-10 is enough for me to be a concern, when I turn my key to the on and crank the A/T light is on for 1-2 second count and then goes off ... so I would say there is an issue yours is having during the initial diagnostic stage of starting the car.

Yea it's a concern for me too...Just doesn't seem right. My mechanic is really good I'm kinda surprised he didn't find anything to be wrong. I'm gonna see what happens when I call up the dealership and see what the find...

Go through the suggestions above...there is a suggestion detailed to check the FSM for self-diagnosis.

Read through the FULL thread, then post if you have questions.
