v6 3.0 MPGs???

well here's the story,

not quite sure why my 2000 maxima 5spd is doing horrible mpgs or im just paranoid. i replace the air filter about every 15-30k, change synthetic oil at 3k religiously, adjust tire pressure to 35psi every oil change, and changed plugs just recently at 90k and my car is at about 115k now.

for a full tank i can barely do 300 miles on a full tank. i find that kind of odd or is that normal?

i replaced a new oem maf a few years due to a p0171 lean code. got the service procedure off of all-data that recommended replacing MAF and reprogram.

I never reprogrammed the ecu due to the labor fees at nissan but the R&R on the MAF still fixed the CEL. as of right now, still no CEL.

I'm wonderiing now if maybe i need to update my ecu...

300miles divided by 16gallons = 18.75MPG

It takes me 5 weeks before I burn through a whole tank in my Maxima. I couldnt give the roughest miles per tank full.

39.5 hwy? I kinda find that hard to believe. How do you calculate your fuel economy? Unless your running on less cylinders or you do that hypermiling stuff, close to 40 mpg highway is a little crazy. Unless you meant 29.5 hwy, now that's understandable.

If you didn't make a mistake, please give some details.

Im getting about the same as OP, and in almost the exact same boat too. I stay up on oil changes like its a religion, bought a new air filter <1000 mi ago. New plugs about 10,000 miles ago. I do mostly city driving, somewhat aggressive. But im not racing from stoplights by no means. Also, I have 4AT. Never had a single SES or CEL in the three years of ownership. I mostly fill up with premium, although lately I have been using midgrade every once in a while, but it seems to make no difference.

I only averaged 23.6 mpg on a long road trip a few weeks ago and around 19 mpg in mainly city driving. I had an old 1989 maxima and before i sold it, it was only managing 15.8 mpg so if could be worse OP.

I don't even get to 300 a tank all city and I've been fighting the mpg war for a while I started off getting only 230 to a tank and now I'm up to 285 a tank after changing maf, plugs, coils, doing y-pipe, test pipe, and b-pipe. You didn't specify if yours is city or highway miles but if its city it sounds normal.

Per the Thread title...are you really only getting 3MPG's? 18 wheeler truck with fully loaded trailer can do better than that...

I was doing 200 to a tank...Thanks to NmexChanged plugs used MAF cleaner to clean the MAF. Put this fuel system cleaner when I went to fill up. Just did 310 (not including reserve) not including my reserve. It's not great but it's a huge difference. Maybe try doing this an cleaning your 02 Sensors by putting them in gasoline?

I don't care what anyone's MPG's are, what they get to a tank, etc. That's why I deleted your posts. What I want is a better explanation from the OP....soon.

We all know LW wheels will improve your MPG's.
We all know maintenance items also can improve on MPG's.
We all know driving like a numb nuts will negatively affect your MPG's.
We all know driving in the city 100% will negatively affect MPG's.

Seems counterproductive to delete somewhat relevant posts. I understand flame fests, but relevant (even semi) info should be left alone IMHO...

An actual calculated MPG # would be helpful, if you're doing stop and go driving 300 miles out of "a tank" doesn't sound abnormal to me. What are you shifting at RPM wise? I've recently adjusted my commuting driving style by trying to never breach 2200-2300 RPM's unless I need to accelerate briskly to be safe and it has had a noticeable positive impact on my mileage (~ 1.2-1.5 MPG).

Crybabies happy now?

Just didn't want it to turn into to "I get this or that or something in between" type of thread..

Carry on,

Can you show some proof of that? Cause I drive close to 50-55 mph most of the time im on highways because of construction, but I highly doubt I get 39 mpg. Much closer to 31-32 if anything but I never go on long road trips so when I get all that city into the mix I end up with 23-24 mpg

If you mean the trip computer, then that I've seen go up to 42 mpg before from driving at those speeds, but thats not realistic at all

The MPG calculator in the trip computer is essentially useless...regardless there has never been a single 3.0/3.5 Maxima that has ever achieved 39MPG.

As a side note , the displays in 5.5 gen is exactly 3.5 mpg optimistic ..... It means my 2002 SE 6MT displays 25 mpg (which is exactly 21.5 in reallity)...My wife's GLE shows 19.5 mpg (which in reallity is 16) ... Both reallity mpg scores were messured to death ....

I think the OP's MPG is normal this is my third Maxima (3.0L) and getting around 285 to a tank is normal when its >95% city driving. He's actually getting closer to 300 so thats good

I don't drive aggressive at all since I got another car to waste gas on. The maxima is my DD and it's awesome other then the mpgs now. I am trying to save gas which is why i started this thread. I shift mostly at 2500 rpm. I do mostly city driving and weekends on highways

All i wanted to know is if around 300 miles off of a full gas tank. Just looking for an estimate and what people's inputs are.

There is no check engine light on as stated in OP and thanks for the road trip App. I will look more into it tomorrow

some people say on a tank they get this or that and they fill up when they have 1/4 tank left, is that your scenario? im stomped as to what your problem may be. only other thing i can think to help you is changing your fuel filter. but before you do that. run about 1/3 or 1/2 can of seafoam in your gas tank and see what happens over the course of two tanks

you need to take into account where you're driving. All city or highway, or if it's a mix, what's you 'city' like? 'City' driving in cherry hill nj vs city driving in philly are very different. Much more traffic and stop and go in philly. and like phatboislim said, when do you fill up? rather than give X miles per tank, do the calculation and give actual mpg since everyone fills up at different times. Some at 1/2, some at 1/4 some at 1/8th, some at E
