Depends on your fuel set-up too.

I still don't see roughly 300 miles out of a "tank" with 95% city driving being a sign of any problem at all. If I drove 95% city where I live I'd probably be luckly to see 250 miles.

This thread has shown epic progress towards finding a solution to why somw pwople get 300 miles a tank, and why some get 400 miles a tank, and shows the perfect solution to why some people see different mileage in the city and on the highway.

I have no check engine light on and the cat runs strong so no clogged cat.

I did have a p0420 code before for the cat, it was a bulletin and i got a reprogram at the dealer to fix the problem. under warranty at 8 years, 80k for emissions warranty

i do mostly city driving and highway on weekends. im starting to think its normal. just gonna have to log the mpg on my iphone soon and see how it is.

thanks for all the inputs

I'm on my droid x. So I can't really type everything on it. But I would like to share my experience on mpg with my car.

So I always use 93 in my car. And I only use bp and shell. Every other gas station has made my mpg go down. Anyways in the winter when I first got my car I got 266 miles before the gas light came on. No matter what I did. After I tuned up my car. I changey air filter to a k and n air filter for 59 dollars. Andthat aline made my gas milage go from 266 miles a tank to 350 mikes before the gas light cones on. Which is about a 3 more miles per gallon depending on how much gas is left when light comes on.

Shortly after I have been measuring my gas tank to when I fill it and how much miles I put on it. And I can say I average about 20mpg. I tried "semi hyper miming." And I get 24 mpg average. I do about 400-500 miles a week. And its about 50/50 city and highway. My car is completely stock except for the air filter and I have bad shocks and stuffs. I also have an auto matic 4 speed and u have 199600 miles on my car. My rear axle beam is also bent. So one of my wheels is creating a drags on my car. Or engine. My phone is starting to slow down with this long message but I want to say

I bought the original 10 dollar air filter at first thinking that it doesn't matter because its a new airfilter and my log should be the same and I can say my mpg has decreased very bad using the 10 dollars gram air filter so my suggestion if you don't have a aftermarket intake is to get a k ann air filter

My thoughts is I believe with hypermiling out cars can get 30mpg on the highway if it was properly tuned.

With the 5.5 gen 6MT's, I think 30 MPG should be easy on the highway on cruise at a low speed (about 55-60). Hypermiling probably isn't necessary for 30 mpg on the highway if the car's running fine.

here's some screen shots that someone here recommended me using the road trip app... not sure if im using it right. I have it on "filled tank" and i recently starting pumping mid grade since gas is ridiculous now.

i been pumping a little amount since i just got back from vacation and didnt need to fill her full.

I can repeatably get 32+ mpg on the highway @65-69 mph in my 6MT. My biggest challenge is resisting the urge to accelerate quickly / shift at higher rpms. Also keep in mind, I have headers, HFC and 2.5" catback.

Has anyone else found that their odometer / trip meter is slightly inaccurate, i.e. under-reports the distance? On road trips, over the course of a full tank it can be between 10-20 miles less than I record on my GPS, which translate to 1-2 mpg lower calculated vs. actual. For example,

375 mi (trip meter) / 15.0 gal = 25 mpg
390 mi (GPS) / 15.0 gal = 26 mpg

5.5 gen experience

So this string started with the 3.0L engines - mine is an '03 I-35 ( auto). I drive 150 miles a day, 90%+ highway, and at 70-78 mph ( usually 8 over the speed limit is what is allowed). I accelerate moderately, but usually not over 4000 rpm.

For the past 3 years and about 100K miles I have averaged between 25 and 26 mpg. The average mileage display shows shows 10% high all the time. That is close to what the previous poster reported ( 3.5 mpg). BTW - I have an '04 Murano that also reads 10% high. I keep tire pressure around 32 psi. The variations for summer / winter gas, cold vs warm temps, and running the AC are 1-2 mpg throughout the year. If I drive only around town, the mileage dips into the lower 20s.

I'd love a way to drop the rpm's down from 2500 at 75 mph to closer to 2000. Are there any alternate tranny / final drive gears available for the auto?

Chuck

All i wanted to know is if around 300 miles off of a full gas tank. Just looking for an estimate and what people's inputs are.

There is no check engine light on as stated in OP and thanks for the road trip App. I will look more into it tomorrow

I know this is a 5th gen thread but since I saw other gen owners posting replies, I wanted to share my quick 2 cents...300 miles off of a full gas tank is a little low, not terribly low, but a little low. I have a 1995 Maxima A/T with 131k and I have ONLY stop and go city/hwy commute and I average 390 - 420 miles in a tank using 93. I used to get 320 - 340 miles in a tank (also using 93) but then I changed the way I drive. Keep in mind that only 40% of my commute is constant hwy speeds and the other 60% is stop and go city and highway.

What's different about the way I drive now is I accelerate gently, regardless of what speed I'm driving at...There are stretches of hwy where I do 75 mph but to get there, I take my time, I don't rush.

I believe you should be able to get much better mpg's if you accelerate slower. I know it's difficult because Maximas are fun to drive aggressive but give it a shot, and see how it goes.

Although I have noticed that my GPS tends to read maybe 2 mph higher than what my speedometer shows, I haven't really needed to use my GPS for long trips to notice what you mean.

However, for your setup w/ the headers and catback, are you tuned? If you are, do you know what you were getting when you were just cruising in terms of mpg?

Part throttle tuned or full throttle tuned?

Our cars need full throttle tuning, part throttle their fine, so this would be irrelevant on a highway trip unless it was ***** to the wall.

The one mod that I noticed affected MPG's the most was LW wheels and tires. Increase of 12-15%,

Hate this

My 96 SE 5Speed always got 400 miles per tank when running premium and around 360 when running 87 Octane...It was bone stock and I only changed the plugs once up until 196k miles, never did a MAF, changed the tranny fluid once. 16 inch tires, nothing special.

I am getting about the same mileage from my 2003 SE 6speed per tank and I have never changed the plugs, tranny fluid once as well and its at 125k and I just had to replace the MAF. I drive them both about the same, sometimes hard, sometimes not, come city, some highway.

Guess I am just lucky and I obviously should do more maintenance to decrease my MPG

Hey Nmex, see you are red now. Been a wierd couple years, no issues got tired of posting I guess. Needed some info on the MAF conversion so I came back and been lurking a bit, posted a few times. I will try and be a little active again but no promises. Its good to see some old friends though. Hope all is well...

I go through the same stages, hadn't posted much if any back in late 07-09 and began again in late 09.

This place isn't good because I've dumped a LOT of $$ since I've been back, upwards of 2-3k.

Part of the reason I have been gone is the lack of fundage for my ride. I was unemployed for almost two years and that was rough. First necessity was the 2001 MAF purchase with Thermistor swap to fix my code. Just limping her along for now until I can afford
