A/C Compressor Clutch Plate Missing?!?
A/C Compressor Clutch Plate Missing?!?
So, my A/C stopped blowing cold air this weekend. I naturally assumed it was just in need of being recharged. So, I bought a can of R134 and hooked it up to the car. The reading showed about 120psi, so I was taken back.
To shorten the story, I'll just say that I started trying to check on whether or not the clutch was engaging. I thought that it was staying engaged all the time and never disengaging (even with the climate control system off). After searching the site and coming across a diagram, I realized (brain fart) that the metal piece I was looking at was the pulley, and not the clutch plate. There IS NO clutch plate!!

Anyone else ever deal with this problem?
Any chance DAVEB would be able to sell me just the plate, the shim, and the bolt that holds it on?

I'm not sure they will part that assembly out but if anyone would know it'd be DaveB. That pulley isn't cheap. You may have better luck at a junk yard, check http://www.car-part.com

Funny you're having a problem with your AC...I was on my way back from Mobile, AL, where I went to pick up my 7 week old pitbull and I was about 45 minutes from home and it went from ice cold to Sahara in a matter of minutes.
So, I didn't drive it anymore, but I washed it on Sunday and it still wasn't blowing cold. To make this long story short...I tried recharging and got the same reading. I called my guy at the stealership and took it in this morning.
The result...AC Compressor is working fine and no leaks anywhere. BUT...there is a sensor behind the glove box that acts like a Thermistor. I believe the "technical" name for it is Evaporator Temperature Sensor (Part # 27723-4P000). Mine is shot.
They are charging me $14 for the part, DaveB hs it for around $12, Courtesy has it online for $10.99. The kicker is...it's about $200 in labor
. But when the temp is 96 degress plus everyday and I don't have the luxury to "dress down" for work...I have to pay up.
Has anyone else had this issue...?

Did you check the car-part website. I found several entire compressors in the $100 range near you on there. You can't even buy the pulley that cheap...
I looked at that site the other day, but I probably didn't use it right. I'll check again tonight when I get home. Thanks for the heads up.
I tell you what...the stealership is full of s#!T. To make a really long story short...these clowns are telling me I need a new compressor. First it was the Evaporator Temp Sensor, which I paid for. Next it was an Expansion Valve, which I didn't pay for because I saw the BS! Next it was the Compressor which they told me they would put in for free if I bought the $603 part, that DaveB has for $442!
What did I do...told them that I would be in to pick up my car...kiss my @$$ and have a nice day.
...to be continued.

Ive noticed the magnet on the clutch is not engaging. I can "tap" the clutch in to where it makes contact and the A/C start blowing again, but I think im pushing my luck. Is it safe to just replace the clutch only? i dont have the dough to throw on a compressor (even after market). Anyone try this before???
The clutch is a replaceable part. I haven't done it myself, but have read threads here on the org from people that have. It doesn't seem to be all that easy of a job. You will have to remove the compressor from the car and will need a gear puller to get the old clutch off.

Passenger wheel and splash guards need to be removed then the belt. It's tight getting the puller in there but it can be done.
