Hey guys question...my 02 GLE...when I start it, it makes a ticking or rattling noise as Im starting it up, once shes running and Ive let the key go the sound is gone and does not return. The only time this sound is present is when Im starting her up. I wont have time to take a look until Saturday morning, anyone else ever have this symptom or issue? Its only when Im starting her so Im thinking starter or exhaust? Your thoughts? Thanks in advance...

 

Most early maxima with the vq35de have this problem. Mine only does the noise on cold start ups and is most likely the timing chain tensioner. If you notice it becoming worse then it could need replacing. Have any videos of the noise?

 

no videos...Im a newbe and cant post attachments just yet... kinda sounds like theres no oil in the car but its full...so this is a common problem? Any idea how cumbersome of a job it is to swap out that tensioner? Thanks man!!!

 

From my understanding, this is common. Make sure you are using good fuel.

 

Yes, it's called the 1-second rattle. About half of them do it, should not be a problem.
