03 I35. Radiator flush

Hey all,

I know this topic should be in the fluids forum. Any how flushed the radiator today. as I was totally in space. Let's just start by saying my wife bought prestone 50/50 mix. Me being in space just said thankyou and got to work. Did not realize it was prestone until job was done, and I mean done system perged and all. To say the least I'm not going thru this again with Nissan fluid. I'm done and Im peeved at myself for not checking to make sure it was Nissan fluid, I mean shiznit, how the freak do I miss this big yellow bottle. Anyhow after realizing what I had done, atleast the prestone says it's silica free. Question is how screwed am I?

I thought our beloved cars needs certain fluids. The kicker is she went and got the stuff on Friday. Why did she not go to Nissan. Her answer was, are you ready for this. I did, and it was 22.00 a gallon with tax. So I figured advanced auto would sell that stuff. I said why would advance auto sell Nissan fluid. She said, how would I know they didn't, and besides I got 3 gallons for 47 bucks, which mr mathematician is 19 dollar saving. I just looked at my wife and said. When is my lease with you up, and what's your residual. Lmfao. To say the least she still loves me and I love her. It's cheaper to keep em. Prestone 50/50 at 14.77 a gallon. What the freak.

My question IS, Why the hell didn't you get the correct coolant yourself, and not have to blame your wife???

I was under the impression that our cars needed special fluids.I.E. nissan, toyota, ect.I get these impressions from our fluids forum. I asked her to do me a favor. I don't blame her and I'm not mad. I like the fact that i screwed up, I thought it was a funny that i would miss somthing like that, My wife and I always bicker back and fourth, but in a loving way. Oh, and i'm probably not easy to be married to since i'm totally type A lol. I'm just glad it should be o.k. I did however go and by castrol import atf today and am planing another drain and fill. Only planning on 4.5 to 5 Quarts on the drain and fill. hey does anybody know were i can get more crush washers for both tranny and engine oil. I only have gone to dealer.

I didnt want to say anything but since you brought it up yourself...... dude you go as far as miss-noticing a big yellow container then turn around and put the blame on your wife for buying the wrong thing? at least she was smart enough to know that $22 a gallon was expensive and she would probably get it for cheap elsewhere, so appreciate that. you're totally to be blamed here for more than just one reason.

on a side note, I dont know where you live but over here the 50/50 are $9.99 at walmart and about $14 at autozone, so you most definetly over paid. Its beyond me why you would opt to pay $47 for 50/50 when you could have bought the 1 gallon of 100% antifreeze for $13 and picked up a gallon of distilled water for $1 and had a 50/50 mixture for $14 and be done with it. a mere 2 minute effort but $33 savings, nay?

There is a $5 rebate form on them on prestone's website so FWIW if you still have the receipt then claim it.

Qt1 your absolutely right. With this being said, that makes a huge difference. I could of done the change so much cheaper. Yes I have the receipt and will go on their web site. I thought I would need 3 gallons being the the cars cooling system takes 9 qts. These is a 1 st time fore everything.

P.s. I do appreciate my wife for everything. She is my better half.

I've been using Prestone in my Ford Taurus wagon and Subaru Forester. No issues.

9 quarts includes the reservoir and it is only slightly larger than 2 gallons (8 quarts).

well Im not sure how you went about doing yours but the drain holes on the engine are hard to access so instead this is what I did.

I bought 100% antifreeze for $12, prestone super flush for $3 and (7) one gallon bottles of distlled water.

There is a drain valve under the radiator and when you open it, 4 out of the 8 quarts of fluid drains out, which essentially means 50% of fluid remains. I poured in the superflush and 1 gallon of water and let the car idle for 20 minutes. let it cool down completly, then I drained the radiator using the drain screw. this time 25% oil fluid remains. fill up with 1 gallon again, idle for 10 minutes, let it cool and drain. once you go through the process with the 7 gallons of water, you essentially have less than 1% of old fluid in the engine. at this point your system has 99% (4 quarts) fresh distilled water. now just dump in your prestone 100% antifreeze (4 quarts) and you will get your 50/50 mixutre.

this is the best method suggested by the .org, although the use of prestone superflush is optional, but for $3, i figured it wouldn't hurt while im at it. all in all, after rebate, mine came out to under $20 after rebate. much better than the $80 quoted by some random shop.

Thank you qt1. Im going to do it your way next time. Doesn't sound that bat, not to mention you end up getting most of old stuff out. Like 1 percent old fluid is awesome.I will however say the heat my car is quicker and I feel alot better knowing that a large Part of my 100,000 mile matainance is complete. Just the plugs and belts remain.

I don't understand. Why would anyone put stealership antifreeze in their system? It's like putting Nissan AT fluid or Nissan oil in your car. Nissan fluids are a waste of money. Does anyone buy fluids from Nissan? Please chime in if you do.

I was reading the fluids part of our forum under matainance. And some are saying we should be using like Toyota red or Nissan green ect. Blah blah blah and so on. They say our cooling systems require it. That the reason I wanted it. This was my first time doing a cooling flush

Sorry, my rant wasn't directed at you but just in general. I don't believe there are any magical additives in Nissan fluids. It is just another way for them to make more money.

That's totally cool Cabernet. I just don't want to have to buy a friggen radiator because of wanting to save a buck or 2. But now I know it's horse cheese, and knowing is half the battle

I too am a user of both Prestone and Peak Antifreeze for my Maxima, and no problems either since our original coolant is greenish-yellow, so you're good to go. However, for my Honda, the coolant is blu-ish (and Toyotas are red), so if I had a Honda and Toyota, I'd buy from the dealer.

I buy ATF from the Nissan dealer. I feel more comfortable getting dealer ATF since they are formulated specifically to be compatible with Nissan/Infiniti trannies to optimize smoothness. Not sure if it's any different from aftermarket stuff or not, but some OEM fluids are designed specifically to optimize performance or even to hide certain flaws (i.e. the ester oil Nissan recommends for the new VQ37s to stop engine noises), so with my dealer parts discount, it isn't that much more costly than aftermarket brands.

Why dealer ATF. I use castrol import ATF on my drain and fills. I assume it's ok,right?

Lol, wow, you worry so much, sir!!! Yes, Castrol Import ATF is fine. I just personally prefer to use dealer ATF. I like the psychological re-assurance of the formulation being specifically compatible to Nissan trannies, and I've been using the dealer ATF for 10 years (in my old 1993, I found the tranny shifted the smoothest on OEM fluid vs Quaker State or another house-brand ATF).
