Tires...winter...again? suggestions

Ok, so winter has finally hit Central-Ohio. I bought my beautiful brand new 2k1 Max in the middle of the summer... little did I know how badly the stock Potenza's SUCKED on ice/snow

So... saving for new tires, thinking about Kelly asymmetrical treads... any other suggestions? Obviously it snows quite a bit here and there's always ice.

Thnx

either do a search here or dig around www.tirerack.com and read their reviews.

Spud -

I am also in Columbus and I went out and tried my new Blizzaks tonight. They really worked well, although it may be hard to tell, the empty lot I played in only had 1/2" of the white stuff.

Here is my web site with pics of what I got from TireRack. If you want to see them in person, or come along for a ride, let me know.

The Blizzaks are supposed to perform very good in snow and just as good on dry road as comperable A/S tires. There probably your best bet for a winter tire but I wouldn't run them all season.

actually that's what the guy at a local tire store was saying.. but honestly I can't afford $600 ($150/tire on tirerack.com) for 4 tires! I'd better just go really slow! Chains and studs are illegal in Ohio.

nokians from Finland...

..rule the road in winter..long tread life and they have the highest speed rating of any winter tire. Take a drive up to Canada, and get a set with your U. S. $$$'s for next to nothing

I had a chance to try out my Blizzak LM-22s last night on snow/slush/ice covered roads. I was pretty impressed - I had a hard time getting the anti-lock brakes to kick in while hitting the brakes hard. I have run Blizzaks on my other cars in the past and decided to give the LM-22s a try. Other than some additional road noise, I am satisfied so far.

Hi,

I currently have Toyo Observe G02 installed on my 2K1. I also got 15" steel rims (instead of 16") (going from 215/55/16 to 205/65/15). I've tried them in many situations and they are working perfectly.

Good luck...

I also have Blizzak LM22 but I am using 235 45 17. If you can get 16" then that would be a better bet. Happy with the tires but they were not cheap here in Canada during busy time.

I'll second that belatedly. I love the Nokinan NRW's. Although we have had no snow to speak of here in Toronto, over Christmas we drove almost to Montreal to visit the in-laws. At least 20 cars were seen off the road in a 4.5 hour drive but we stuck like glue. How about $700 CAD for four tires, steel wheels and covers installed and balanced!

Re: Re: nokians from Finland...

I learned a lot on Tirerack.com but finally decided on the Toyo Observe Garit M+S. Like the Blizzaks, they have the mountain & snowflake symbol on them, which is supposed to define the best of the best. The rubber is impregnated by walnut shells. I've heard nothing but good things about them...very close to studs and H speed rated. Only $700 for 4 215/55HR-16s on 16" steel wheels balanced and mounted and switched for free for the lifetime of the tire at Les Schwab. $115/tire. I hope they do well...I should have them by Monday.
