100,000 plug replacement time

Hey all,

Actually car had 106886 on the clock. She runs great. I spent a total of 82.55. That's plugs and upper intake gasket. Plugs were like 58 and gasket was 24. I Put in the denso iridium. I did this instead of ngk because I've always used denso in the past with no issue. I've heard people on the forum say stay away from denso, Bosch ect., and stick with The ngk platinum. The job took about 2 hrs, with a helper, and removing the intake was a bit of a pita, poor design on nissans part. But definetly do-able. I'de say scale of 1 to 10, about a 6. Here's the great thing, I was expecting to see the famed oil in the spark plug on the rear vc. I was elated to discover all plug holes were free of oil. The rear plugs were in serious need of change. The front 3 looked great, which makes me suspect that the previous owner just replaced what he could get to. Anyhow job was smooth and when the car was put back together, she fired up nicely.

No backyard mechanic should be dumb enough to cross thread a spark plug, it takes repeated stupidity to do that, along with force and some more stupidity.

Done the job like 3 times...once upper intake and lower for spacers, another for the NGK plugs and again when switched to NGK Iridiums...

Yeah, I just did the same thing a few months ago at 103,000 miles.
But I got yelled at for not changing out the $24 gasket and not replacing the rear VC with a 2004 version. Oh yeah, I never replaced the 2 bolts in the rear by the firewall either.

Still works and has not fallen out of my engine bay though.

It is recommend that u rePlace the upper intake gasket. This the gasket between the upper and lower intake. The upper intake is what u will have to remove to get to the rear spark plugs. Your throttle body is connected to your upper intake. You don't need to remove the throttle body to take off upper intake.

Intake manifold gasket. It's not necessary but recommended.

While you are "in there" changing plugs, there are a couple of things that you may or may not want to do while you have stuff off.

1) Replace the intake manifold gasket. One member here estimated that 75% of the time the gasket can be re-used, but most members replace it regardless. I did not, as mine looked like new and it has not been an issue.

2) Replace the rear valve cover with a 6th-gen valve cover, especially if you find oil in the spark plug wells. The 6th gen fits fine, and does not have the oil-leak problem that the 5.5 gen rear valve cover had. But if yours is not leaking, you may not want to spend the $25 bucks or so plus the additional labor to do the work.

Winner!

OP, you're new to the car, so you may not have learned this yet, but the OEM rear VC is wicked prone to failure (leaks) over time at the center plug. Nissan addressed this design flaw years later in their parts supply, but didn't lower the price. What was discovered here is that the 6th gen VC is a perfect fit, at 1/3 the price of the 5.5 gen.

You know, I think I'm going to go wash the car and blog about it in a new thread.

what about the fuel filter? I've seen the write-up on that part and that looks far worse. PS can anyone tell me the part # for the 6th gen valve cover?
