Just replaced a couple of coils and need to reset the engine codes to see if it comes back. What do I need to reset them? Thanks for the help!!!

Depends on the method.

With a Cipher it takes 5 minutes. It takes longer for you to hook up the Cipher than it does to clear them.

Local auto store and ask them to clear them.

DC battery overnight (I don't like this primitive method, not even sure of it works).

IIRC, there may be a method in the FSM.

I've used this method and it works. It's just a PITA since you can't use the car for ~24 hours if you want to be sure the code gets cleared.

Scanner is the easiest way. Takes just a few minutes.

My $.02, buy a OBD II reader/scanner - they can be had for for <$50. They reset the codes very quickly and you will end up using them for many, many years.

Buy a scanner or go to autozone.

what year is your maxima? Disconnecting the battery wont reset codes if you got a 5.5 gen and up. Theres a procedure you need to do. Something along the lines of:

turn key to on for 3 seconds, within 5 seconds step on gas all the way down and release 5 times, wait 7 seconds and then step on gas for 10 or something. Look it up

Edit:

How to reset ECU in 5th and 6th Generation Maxima's
1. Turn ignition switch on and wait about 3 seconds.

Repeat the following steps (2a and 2b) procedures quickly five times within 5 seconds.

2a. Fully depress the accelerator pedal (HARD).
2b. Fully release the accelerator pedal.

3. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 10 seconds until the CEL starts blinking. (here is where i think you can get a code from this.)
4. Fully release the accelerator pedal (while the CEL is still blinking)
5. Wait about 10 second.
6. Fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for more than 10 seconds.
7. Fully release the accelerator pedal (The CEL light will continue to blink).
8. Turn ignition switch to “OFF” position and now you can start the car. The CEL light should be gone.

I have done the above procedure on my 5.5 and while it's a bit tricky the first time to get the timing down, it did reset my codes immediately.

This will not work on the VQ30s (ie 5th gen max). And yes, disconnecting the battery does reset the ECU on 5.5th gen (can't tell for how long, as i always use the "pedal dance" method)
