ive been having wierd voltage issues that worry me im on my third alternator stock one blew out and from what the alty rebuild guy told me my irragi alty just became faulty....

now i have an excessive amperage alty and my voltage is still bouncing around and not stable @ all while driving it bounces from 13.9 down to 13.0 and then bounces around more.. while the car is on without the engine running it stays @12.5 (yellow top battery)

im wondering could this be a ground issue?? i have the big 3 done with 0gauge wire and im running 0gauge for most my stereo...

i dought 3 seperate altys from 3 different places will do the same thing.. any imput @ all please lemme know

 

The alternator needs a good ground, which is done by the bolts that mount it to the engine block. I doubt if this is the problem. What you could check is the little wire that plugs into the alternator. The black/red stripe wire provides battery voltage to the stator inside the alternator. Check that this wire is making good contact and that it is clean and corrosion free. FYI, the other wire, the brown one, is for the alternator light in the dash.

 

checked my main grounds tighten them up and the one on the battery that helped out alot but...

 

Normall I would say "bad alternator", but with 3 doing the same thing, it makes me wonder.

The only other thing I can think of is the thick wire on the alternator that takes the alternator output back to the battery. Check that wire, the ends of it for bad crimps, corrosion, etc, especially the end at the battery.

FYI, the voltage reading for a good working alternator should be between 14.1 to 14.7 according the the FSM.

 

If you're running 0ga wire, you must have a big system....yes??? Several amps and subs and all that fun stuff? Do you run secondary batteries with an isolator to power your stereo system and keep it seperate from your car's electrical system? If not, guess where all the current comes from when you hit big bass.....yep....your alternator. A big capacitor (1 Farad) will help too if you don't already have one.

 

Pull the fuses for your amps then drive around and check your voltage.i had a older alpine amp that was leaking(bad caps on the power supply)and my voltage would jump around and i drain.

I will ask the simple question though, does it do this when you have the stereo off?
