Cattman Header Noise

Hey guys, just got some cattman headers installed in my 2002 maxima and I love them. The car definitely sounds a lot deeper but does make a sound between 1-1.5k rpms that sounds like a little backfire in the catalytic converter. If this is the reason than I am definitely going to order a test pipe a lot sooner than I had planned. I am not positive but I did want to see if anyone else had an experience like this when first installing their headers and if maybe they just need to be broken in.

I actually just got everything done today, did a 350z clutch and a fidanza flywheel done as well so just trying to break in the clutch nice and easy before I actually see how much power the cattman headers really add. But like I said the noise is quite noticeable especially at 1-1.5k rpms. Any help would be appreciated.

Might need to change spark plugs? I think you may need a tune. Im not an expert on this. I do notice that you get a little backfire..very small noise, but nothing to be worried about. I just thought it was because I needed a tune.

Just changed the spark plugs actually so I doubt that's the problem..but I might try a test pipe and see how that works out instead of a tune..thanks

I think I may know what you talking about. When I'm crusing low rpms (around 1500rpms) and I let off the accelerator I hear a little crack and burble from the exhaust...can't explain it. I don't know if that is the same thing yo uare talking about? I just thought it was because I needed a tune.

usually after installing headers, you need a tune because of that increased airflow, you will definitely feel a difference after.

You are probably running too rich now like about 95% of the people who have installed headers on their Maximas. You need a piggy back and a tune. A test pipe will just make it louder

I agree.....I noticed GAS mileage went down significantly...and when I rev up real high can smell a little gas. I will get a tune in November.

That's the right answer. You're running too rich. You'll notice you lost two O2 sensors during install. You'll need to stretch the lines from the ones that did plug in and get simulators for the other two.

I just gutted my cats and added a Cattman y-pipe, and I am noticing the same thing but a little more severe. When you say tune do you mean dyno tune, and what would one run ya on average?

Give it a few hundred miles before committing to solving a problem than may not persist (or exist).

And take note that knight said "piggyback and a tune".

I feel "special" asking all these questions, but the search is down. So, is a piggyback something like cipher, and a tune is just adjusted timing and a/f ratios? Or am I just completely out of left field

That's the gist of it. Pretty sure you could also drive around with an open laptop and the right software, if you're so inclined. The TS tune was a one-time flash, because they cracked the Nissan codes.
