Doing VC Gaskets... What else?
Doing VC Gaskets... What else?
2001 i30 (VQ30DE-K).
My VC gaskets are leaking oil. Bad. An org member is going to be helping me tomorrow, and I've been trying to get everything ready. A few questions, though: (by the way, I've searched the org for a few days, read tons of how-tos on both the 4th and 5th gen forums. Tons of great stuff, but here's what I'm left with)
1) What sections/pages of the FSM refer to the VC gasket replacement? Specifically, the placement of the RTV? I've seen pics here that say the corners and show, but everyone talks about the FSM. All I can find in there (the EM section) is the exploded diagram.
2) What else should I be doing while I have all of that stuff apart? I picked up some NGK Laser Platinum plugs today, VC gasket set (fel-pro with plug seals and the grommets for bolts), and an intake manifold gasket (might as well, right?). Didn't know if anyone else had suggestions on other things to take care of while I was in there. (I've already replaced IACV and cleaned TB about 30k miles ago).
Thanks in advance!

2) Looks like you've got most of it covered. Your local dealer will probably have the breather tube that connects the VCs in stock. They crack with age. On that note, have some vacuum hose on hand. It's nice to replace it as preventative maintenance. If you haven't bypassed your t-body coolant lines, you can do that, too. It won't hurt to clean the tbody again. Carbon can build up a little bit in 30k miles. I usually clean my MAF when I have the intake apart(CRC).
good luck man...just did this to mine and the intake plenum was a pain to get off. There are 4 bolts on the backside next to the firewall that you can only feel not see. You need a small 12mm socket for them.
Great, thanks for the ideas, nelledge. I think I'm going to head to the dealership tomorrow to pick up the breather hoses. Do you by chance have the part numbers on hand for those? I'm looking them up now, or trying to.
As for the pain of taking of the intake plenum, I'm ready for that. Everyone seems to complain about that part, but the job needs to be done :-/ Thanks for the tips!

Perfect. Thanks again!
Edit: You know, when I went out to my car to take a look to see what all was going to be involved, I was worried about these two hoses. Glad you prompted me to pick up replacements, I'm pretty sure mine are going to break as soon as I touch them... ha.
