Transmission rebuild complete, some oddities

Hey guys,

Finally got the transmission rebuilt on my car and got the car back today. Had the person also do the transgo shift kit, as well as install a trans cooler. The car feels much better but there are a few things happening that I'm trying to put my finger on.

My mechanic had some problems with the car stalling out. He did pull a code for the MAF and the idle being too low. He had cleared the codes prior to my arrival. The MAF code has not returned, but I did get a P0506 (idle lower than expected). I told him that I have had problems with the car idling in the past. I would go ahead and look into those. If those are resolved and I still have issues I'd let him know.

On the way home, the car idles low while in gear. 500-600rpm ish, and the car shudders a little bit with my foot on the brake and the car stopped. Let my foot off and allow the car to move and smooths it out a little. Accelerating from a stop is a little boggy, but then everything feels alright and nice. Light throttle you can definately feel the car shift, but it's not a like a hard shift or bang. Heavy use of the throttle smooths out the shift (which is fast, something I would expect from the shift kit). It feels different from how it used to be, and the car seems to have quite a bit of top end (doesn't feel like it's having a MAF issue).

After I get home, I attempted the idle relearn, which is fine when in neutral, but still low while in gear. When pulling out of gear, revs spike a little before normalizing. The other thing I notice is when attempting to power brake: before the rebuild, I could get revs to about 2000 rpm. Now if I try to do it, I'm lucky to get a couple hundred more than idle.

I got a few vids of the idle and the power braking. I'm trying to get the car re-licensed, but require emissions. Need to get this idle thing resolved. Just want to make sure it's not something related to the TB or MAF before I go back to my mechanic.

Idle then powerbrake:

Thoughts?

So I had the mechanic looked at it. He feels it could be the result of the transgo shift kit. A friend of mine thing it might be a problem with the torque convertor. Any thoughts?

Stall speed is controlled by the torque converter.
This could be your idle issue as well, with a tighter TC the engine may see more load at idle.
Was the TC changed or rebuilt when the trans was done?

It was changed. I'm not sure if he went with used or new (chances are it was used as a couple of the drums inside the transmission that had to be replaced were used).

The buddy I was talking to about the TC also mention with expeirence with older muscle cars, that using too small of a TC could result in this behavior. Maybe it's possible that when my mechanic replaced the unit, he got a unit say for a Altima without realizing it.

My mechanic says to drive it for a little while and lets see how it behaves.

Also notice this evening with the car at park/neutral, a buzzing sort of noise was coming out of the transmission. It goes away if I rev the motor, or put the car in gear.

I would have that checked out before it gets worse or damages anything else

Buzzing hasn't gotten worst. However there is a difference in hot vs. cold. Cold, revs don't bog as much, and generally the car feels more stock like. When it gets warm, the bogging is more pronounced, and shifting feels heavier.

Is this an automatic transmission? I've been having problems with my 2002 Auto trans. Paid $3,000 for a rebuild in 2009 and I am positive I got ripped.

Where did you go for the rebuild?

Hot vs Cold could be a solenoid, but I have very little knowledge of transmissions.

Yup it is. I went to a place in Burien. The guy that did the work is a friend of one of my uncles and has also done transmission work for him. They guy is cool, but what sucks was the time it took, but if you saw how much work he had going for him, it was understandable.

I almost want to see if someone would be willing to swap valve bodies temporarily to see if that changes anything (just in case it is something that is the result of the shift kit).
