Strut Issue

Hello,

It seems my 2001 maxima needs some new struts up front. I was quoted $650 with installation.

When they replace the struts, is it typical that they replace the entire assembly including the spring, mounts, etc?

What is the average cost you have had for replacement and what was actually done? Total replacement or just replacement of strut (unless of course it is an assembly that comes in one piece)

Thanks

Just 2 front struts? I think $650 is a little much. If they said they are replacing the front struts and didn't charge you for anything else then that is all you are changing.

FWIW, I spent less than that on 4 struts, 4 springs, 2 front mounts and 2 sway bar end links. I am no mechanic but I did the job on a day off.

Probably DOESN'T include all the parts you should replace. If it did your quote would probably be in the $800 range.

Spring never needs replacement. Strut mount, bearing, and boots do.

No one makes full assemblies for the 5th gen.

I can do all 4 for that price, ALL the necessary parts, with better parts than the shop would recommend, installed.

....and I'm local

they said the struts, mounts and boots.

So you think that is quite high with labor for just the front 2?

I got this quote from a "reputable" nissan dealer. They state they will use all OEM struts, not Monroe's as they say OEM (Tokicos???) are far superior.

Thoughts?

650 seems pretty steep for just the front. I used a coupon from Pepboys for half off installation, only cost me about 650 for all 4 KYB struts installed. If your going to replace the front struts, you should replace the rear struts too.

My opinion is for you to contact djfrestyl who lives in central Jersey and get him to do all 4 for the same price. It would be worth the trip.

The dealer's price is way high for just the front.

And Tokico's are the manufacture for the OEMs. They are a great strut and what I am rocking on my car. I have the HPs and I'm happy with them.

For dealer prices it's normal.

But from a consumer standpoint, you can get way more for your money. Just by virtue of being on this forum we all learn a LOT and that's what separates us from those that are 'happy to pay' at the dealer or at shops.

Thanks for the props Tom. It's not too far of a drive - about 40 minutes max. HP's are good struts, as are KYB GR-2's. My preference - by a small margin - is for the latter.

I second the notion that you should contact djfrestyl - he's very knowledgeable with the maxima suspension. That price is steep for just the front.

This is fairly reasonable - the only thing I can do that's better is build in the price of the mounts/bearings/boots.

In fact there may be some wiggle room to get some sway bar links and bushings installed too.

Thanks djfrestyl.

Unfortunately for the 2001 Maxima, being my parents daily driver, that car resides in Florida so that would be quite the drive

I do have a 96 maxima I drive on a daily basis where all 4 struts are shot. Just been waiting for the right time and price. The front right makes some really nice creaking noises so I assume the bushing would need to be replaced as well.

What would you do for the 96 max with struts, boots, not sure if bearings are needed, and in at least a front right bushing, perhaps all around?

After swapping out struts, you should get an alignment. I thought that was common knowledge.

Check out that guy like everyone says. It will have its advantages of getting to meet another enthusiast and to learn about the job.

As a habit .. unless you are one that carries your car to the dealership for everything ... always shop around as the dealer in many times overcharge (in my opinion) for the same work that a local shop will do for less and they will do just as good a job. Call around and find a local shop you can depend on.

Good Luck

Sorry for coming here with question about my car, but I have i35. Do I need to get the boots too? I thought all I need to replace is struts and strut mounts.

Also, if I need to replace the boots, can you give me part number or link on infinitipartsusa? Does it cost a lot more to replace the boots with struts and strut mounts?

Replace the boots if they're torn. I'm not sure if you can use the same boots as on a Nissan. If so just order them from your local Nissan dealer as you want them to be OEM.

I always recommend replacing boots with mounts and bearings. But then again we're in the northeast and the weather wreaks havoc on the rubber parts. You're in Florida so the condition of your parts might be better.

That being said, here's your info:
Part # for fronts is 54050-2Y001 - you need two.
http://forums.maxima.org/group-deals...nts-boots.html

Part # for rears is 55240-0M015 - you need two
http://nissanpartsasap.com/nissanpar...illust_seq=01#

Infiniti and Nissan are the same parts.

And, I have NO CLUE what you're talking about with inner and outer boots.

$450 for 4 Tokico Blues? Does that include install? Cause if it doesn't, you got ripped off.

^^^ i unfortunately agree... i got my tokico illuminas for 499 shipped for all four
i've never done any suspension work before my illuminas and eibachs, but a little bit (ok ok, a lot) of research on the org especially and the right tools (most rented for free from autozone) and the job was a one full day, saved a good amount of $$, but if you dont wanna do that yourself, djfrestyl is your man (and i mean that in the most heterosexual way )
and going back to the OP, 650 is waaay too much...
