BAD rattle coming from engine

something else i kept forgetting to get opinions on.

only happens in drive that i have noticed.

at about 1700-1800 rpm, there is a nasty rattle sound that seems to come from the engine. sounds like marbles in a pringles can almost. under 1600 no sound, over 1900 no sound. sometimes i can feel it in the acc pedal when it happens.

hard to pinpoint exactly where the sound is really coming from. its loud enough to sound like the whole engine is doing it.

ideas? or anyone else that has had this happen and solution to diagnose and fix?

I bet your search will come up with something to do with the timing chain....

So it only happens on take off and low RPM's? Does it sound kind of like a pulley rattling and not coming from inside the engine itself?

Rochester replaced the idler pulley thinking that was causing some rattling noises before I purchased the car. I think with the extra driving I do compared to Rochester i'm starting to hear it more and more. Not sure if it's the same noise you are hearing though. Going to get it checked out soon

this is one of those things that is just baffling me. no, it is not the timing chain, i know what that sounds like cause i have that too right now. this car is falling apart it seems.

i will pop the hood and record the sound it makes and post it. see if that helps explain what i am talking about.

just an update.. the rattle is definately coming from the drivers side. it is much worse and much louder while driving. when parked, e-brake and put in drive, rattle can be heard around 1500 rpm. while driving however, it happens around 1700-1900. drives me nuts that i cant pinpoint this thing.

sounds too loud to be inside. im going to take it to a friend tomorrow and see what he thinks. he has access to a dyno so we can get the car in motion, so to speak, and get under and around the whole thing.

The simplest source could be a loose heat shield on the y pipe, just behind the oil pan.

mine is also doing this in low rpm's , i stopped worrying about it for right now, some say the car needs oil, some say timing chain, chain tension is slack. i cant figure it out but its embarassing at times. and just the other day i was at the atm and a white 5.5 was taking off from the light, he has the same rattle, go figure.

i will try to get under it today and see if i can mess with the heat shields.. maybe tighten the bolts if i can or even bend the edges out a little. (read that helps sometimes)

I have that same rattle. It started about 2 weeks ago for me. I changed my oil thinking that might be it since it had been a little while. That didn't help. If you figure it out let me know what it was for you. It is really annoying!

Mine isn't the heat shields, since they are gone. Mine sounds more like a pulley but it's been replaced. Possibly the AC pulley but I need to look into it more

Timing equipment aka tensioners is my guess. I have the same exact noise.

Those of you with the noise, any issues other than just being annoying? Trying to gauge how serious it is

+1 on the embarrassment factor, nice looking car in great condition, but when you move off from the light, there goes the rattle, I'm just curious whats the ratio of us with this issue, i have 124K, 6-speed stock engine.

after getting Bank 1&2 cam codes even after replacing both a few weeks ago, Bank 2 went away leaving Bank 1 still there, now I'm getting excessive high idle @925, leaving my CEL on all the time. I've just about had it with this maxima. if it ain't one thing it's another.

Same issue

I'm facing the same rattle sound as described by the original OP on my 7th Gen max. Any suggestions appreciated.

I think mine was from the belt tensioner pulley.
