Towing with a 2000 Maxima

Hey guys,

From what I read online the tow capacity for the maxima is only 1000 lbs with 100-110lb tongue weight. We have a 14ft camper that weights 1900lbs plus I guess whatever is put in it. That obviously exceeds the 1000lb capacity... But I am wondering does anyone have experience towing anything around that weight?

Oh the trailer is from the 70s so it has no built in brakes.

You need a 4x4 for something of that weight and considering your trailer doesn't have any built in brakes too.

I've never towed and don't think I ever will with the Max... I complain when i have rear passengers... go figure!

I'm not a "tower" but your trying to double your max's rated capacity of 1000lbs plus your weight or anyone else who could be riding. Our trannies, especially auto, aren't that great either. It is your car but I wouldn't advise you to do it.

Towing that weight camper without trailer brakes sounds a little too sketchy for me. I wouldn't do it. If it was popup camper, maybe...

lol well it was a bit farfetched but thanks for the input lol. I miss having a truck to tow my toys but I do not miss 11 mpg.

If you want a car that will tow that kind of weight, you need a Hemi Charger or Magnum. With the right set-up, they are rated to tow 5000 pounds. With just a hitch, 3500 lbs.

My Volvo S80 tows a maximum of 3500 pounds (under the condition that the trailer has brakes) and I've towed some heavy U-haul trailers before. Accelerating on the highway becomes dangerous and braking distance (even with built in trailer brakes) is greatly increased. The trailer wobbles the whole car on the highway if you go too fast or if you're not careful. Not to mention the stress and heat that is created in the tranny and the stress put on the suspension and the engine.

I would highly recommend not exceeding the rating in the manual, they're set where they are for very good reasons.

I figured but I just wanted to ask. I have a fair amount of experience towing but never with a car lol. We used to have a pre runner and a 5.9L Durango which were both fine pulling our boat or camper. I Think I will just buy a third vehicle for towing. Thanks!

Just a note coming from European cars our US Tow Ratings are normally 25% - 50% of the tow rating given in Europeans.

Probably due to our population of lawyers.

As an example my wifes 2010 Golf has a US tow rating of 1,000lbs and a UK tow rating of 1,400kg or 3,000lbs.

2,000lbs if that is the actual weight is actually not very heavy at all.

I have a class I hitch on mine.

I've towed an enclosed 4x8 uhaul trailer a few times hauling my bike cross country....and a few other items. Total weight prob closer to 1500lbs TOTAL.

I also have a smal 4x8 utility trailer that I've hauled stuff with (500lbs tare) as well as a heavy duty lawn tractor on the back. No issues.

While I don't recommend doing what I've done all the time....I have to say, my Max handled it all JUST fine!
Granted, I have a 6pd, AND upgraded 6th gen front brakes, but really -- if you take it easy and drive smart -- the max is a capable hauler, within the prescribed limits of the frame and suspension.

For the capacities the OP is considering...I'd say you are WAY WAY over the limits of what this car is designed for!

Get the proper tool for the job bRa!
