Amazing MPG......

Not a Maxima but, a Nissan product...... I rented a 2012 Nissan Altima 2.5 S to attend a wedding this weekend in NC. I'm really surprised that I made the trip 554 miles on one tank of gas. On board computer shows that I have approx another 50miles before empty. It took me $51 to fill the tank in NJ @ $3.53 gal. The Altimas' fuel tank is 20gal cap approx... It took some getting used to with the CVT Transmission but, the car pulled nicely when stepping on it.... ect...

My mother's 2003 Nissan Altima 2.5 would get unbelievable gas mileage as well. Round trips to Chicago, Illinois from Des Moines, Iowa with only 1 fill up.

Has anyone experienced problems with the earlier model Nissan Altimas (2003 and up) when they are a 2.5 L 4 cylinder?

My mother purchased one brand new off the lot in 2003 and by late 2011 she had put only 45k miles on it and she drives like the grandma she is (does the speed limit and is a very careful driver, would never "punch" the gas) and had the car services by the dealership as the maintenance schedule suggested. By the time the car hit 40k miles we had to replace the thermostat 2 times because the car wouldn't get good heat. After the car was acting up a 3rd time and we bled the system I decided to tear it down and found it had a bad head gasket. Afterwards I called my cousin who works for a Nissan dealership in Illinois and he said he has seen many politely driven 2.5 Altimas come in with a blown head gasket. My cousin thought perhaps the 2.5 4 cylinder is too small of a motor for the larger vehicle?

Just thought I'd throw this out here and see what I hear.

I think the 5th gens have an 18.2 gallon tank, if I remember what the owner's manual said. I was also able to squeeze 400 out of a tank once, but normally I'll fill up before the light comes on around an 1/8th and get about 320 or so.

When you driving highway you are going to get high miles like that, no surprise. I have an 03 Acura MDX with a 19.2 gal tank. I remember being able to go 440+ miles on a full tank in a V6 3.5L engine in an SUV that weighs 4500 lbs....not including me, the wife, luggage, subwoofers, amps, etc......so thats typical. MPG meter said about 22 MPG.

OK, 18.5 it is then. I was close! Maybe it was my Magnum that had the 18.2 gallon tank. I remember with the MDS on the Hemi being able to drive from Portland to the border, drive around Vancouver all weekend, then cross back to the States and finally fill up in Blaine to the tune of about 430 miles...with a 5.7L V8 Hemi! I so loved that wagon. Wife says when we get the 2nd paid off I can get my 2008 Steel Blue SRT8 Magnum. I told her by then the new Caddy CTS-V wagon 6-spd will be affordable and I may just get that one instead...

no silly

he means take a calculator and do it yourself. Miles driven divided by actual amount of gas you put in the tank to re-fill it.

The on board computer is generous with MPG usually.

They have the same weight of a 4th/5th gen. Probably too much engine load on those I4.
