Transmission swap?

I have an '01 maxima GLE that's transmission is on its last legs! It used to be that if you let the car sit to warm up a bit you wouldn't get that annoying hitching .. but now it just pretty well does it all the time! So my question is this, should I try to swap it out? .. and if so, how much work is this ? how much do you think it'll cost me? And which years of car are compatible with mine for transmissions ? If not, should i just sell it and buy something new ? Thanks!

I'd take it to a reputable shop and have them either overhaul it or swap it out with an overhauled unit, since the work/labor will be backed with a warranty.

The only thing that scares me about that is the price of it! I also just saw my engline light on .. getting a code for an 02 sensor. Could that have anything to do with the hitching im getting ?

If you've never dropped a transmission before, I'd let a shop do it. The hardest part is just dealing with the awkward weight if the auto. But do like T Behr said, as long as the work is warrantied, your fine

I just swapped my 6 speed and the weight and size sucked. I would call someone crazy to swap an auto without a lift and trans jack

Well we have everything here we need to do it, lift and all that in the garage .. I just want to know how hard it will be to do. I know a lot of things we've changed on the car have been a b***h to get out and put back in!

Lol. Call me crazy then. I do it with a floor jack and jack stands.

with a lift and a transmission jack, you should be fine with experienced people by your side.

First you need to diagnose the problem. Don't do anything till you know exactly what's causing the symptoms. It could be electrical or some other issue which doesn't require transmission work. If you just take it to a shop and tell them to swap or rebuild the tranny they probably will.

Also, when was your last fluid change and what fluid are you using?

Man...talk about going overboard. You could very well have the transmission rebuilt and end up with the same exact problem. Why? Because it can be caused by other things related.

I don't know if you did a search at all, but the slipping is an issue for 2k and 2k1 autos. It is well documented and there is a TSB for it from Nissan.

Do yourself a favor and do some searching on the forum for the issue.

Does no one use the damn search feature?
