I want to change oil in my manual transmission. I got 2003 6mt.
The reason I want to change it is that I get a slight grind noise when I shift from second into 3rd gear. I heard about this problem and was wondering if changing oil will help it a little.

3rd gear crunch is somewhat common on the 6mt 5.5 maximas, surprisingly mine doesn't do it. Amsoil i hear is the best for that, im running lucas gear oil in mine now.

which Amsoil, can you give me an exact name, also what kind of lucas?

PM Talkinghorse about it. His name's ed and he's an amsoil dealer on the org. you'll need about 2.5 qts I believe. Tell him what you'll need it for and he'll let you know.

Amsoil is good, but IMO, Redline MT90 felt "smoother" for lack of better words, even when cold.

And yes, Talkinghorse is awesome to deal with.

I wonder why the 6mt's only use 2.5 qts and the 5mt's use 4.5 qts?

come on guys I really need help on this one, I heard that GL-5 eats up synchronizes so if its really true I dont want to put any of it in

I think that may only be for the 5-speeds. The 6 speeds may be different enough to use GL-5. I will be changing my 5 out soon with some Redline MT-90.

Gl-4 ONLY! I have had redline for about 30k. I like it.

Who told you GL-5? For the 6MT, Nissan recommends GL-4 and a viscocity of 75W-90 or 75W-85.

I experienced just the opposite. I had run Amsoil for years, during a clutch swap I decided to go with the Redline just to check it out. I drained it two weeks later.
I guess its just a personal preferance.

All of the reviews of Redline I've read for Nissans in DD activities defer me to think it's not the best oil for a DD. Same thoughts as Royal Purple Oils.
They're both thin oils despite the viscosity ratings, and oil samples agree that these are not the best oils for DD engines/longevity.
I have no personal experience with Redline, but I've been very very happy with Amsoil's performance over the years through crappy altering Canadian temps and over a few vehicles.

Amsoil is the best of both worlds. I just did another order with TalkingHorse and highly recommend him also, great guy to work with.

To reitterate everyone's comments, your car uses GL-4. That's all you should be putting in it.

Just to reiterate as well, the VLSD 5-spd trans uses about 4.3 qts of fluid correct?

Get Redline MT-85. It's designed for our transmissions.

I believe so, but your '03 only needs about 2.5 quarts.

At 75,000 miles, I put redline MT-90 and loved it. Smooth gear changes.

2 years later, at 120,000 miles, I did another gear oil change but this time, I decided to go back to OEM nissan gear oil (from the dealership). It felt smoother with the OEM oil... probably because of the age of the redline. Its been over 10,000 miles with it and went through a cold winter... I gotta say, even in single digit temperatures, it shifts very smoothly without effort, where before switching back to OEM oil, second gear always gave me a hard time in cold weather.

OEM FTW IMO

Valvoline GL-4. Can't go wrong with that, but hard as hell to find anymore. I purchased a few gallons of it from a jiffy lube type place several years ago (many) and they actually had to dig the barrel out of the back storage room to blow the dust off it and "tap" it. It had never been opened. Curious to know how many tranny's were destroyed becuz tehy did not use GL-4 in them...
