Rattling-timing chain?

Looking for some advice/feedback. My '02 6 speed has almost 189K and I have been noticing a rattling recently. It comes and goes when I drive but definitely makes itself known when I take my foot off the accelerator (to either coast or up/downshift). Does this sound like a timing chain issue? If so, at this point would it need replacing? If so, just some opinions would be appreciated on whether or not it is worth spending the $$ to do this or just dumping the car at this point? Thx for feedback.

check tensioner and a/c compressor search for these keywords in the forum to get the bypass belt number.

lots of rattlin' threads...

does it happen around 2k RPM? have you checked your oil levels?

I get the rattle around 2K with low oil levels.

The original engine in my 2k2 lasted to around 290k miles. The timing chain & tensiones in a 2k2 are of a MUCH beter design than those of 6th gen Maximas. Sounds to me like a oil burning issue. Before the original engine died, it was buring about a quart every 2000 or so miles. When it was getting close to that, I would hear a rattling or "chattering" coming from the the engine when I let off the accelerator. Have you checked the oil level? Does your car burn oil?

Depending on the overall condition of the car, and your mecahnical skills, you can find a new engine for anywhere from $600-$1000 to drop in her. However it is a judgement call that YOU will ahve to make. I was able to get a new engine dropped in mine for around $1400 all in. Cheaper than a year of car payments. YMMV.

i had something like this happen to me yesterday, but more like helicopter noise coming from the front , specially when i let go off the accelerator. So i got home and did some googling and someone said they had it happened to them to and the only problem was loose lug nuts, and guess what? my left front wheel had all the nuts LOOSE! lol so now its fixed, check into that?
