16 inch tire on 17 inch rims cause shaking?

ok so i have a 2001 infiniti i30 (got it a month ago), and didn't know i had 17 inch rims till today when i measured them..apparently the previous owner put 16 inch tires on the 17's..idfk why, but now i have all 16's on my 17s..can this cause the annoying shaking all over the car that i have above 50mph? or is it likely warped wheels like i think it is.

and yes im going to get 17 inch tires and have the effing mechanic pay me back for putting 16 inch tires on and not checking first..

I want to see pictures. What an idiot that put 16" tires on 17" wheels, That could probably cause the above mentioned issue.

well i think the back left wheel is done for..we just put air into them a few weeks ago, they hold up to 50psi, and we filled them all to about 35 or 40 not sure, and its down to 20..

in fact, all the others have gone down about 5-10psi

P.S. just so were all clear, im saying that the tires are R16's mounted on 17 inch rims haha, just making sure theres no confusion

Rim size is measured from where the tire bead sits, not the overall diameter of the wheel
(see here:http://www.autoamenity.com/FAQ/WheelSize.htm and here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheel_sizing#Wheel_size)

as hilarious as this thread is,

OP since you said the vibration occurs around 50mph check your wheel bearings...jack the car up so the wheel is off the ground and see if the wheel has any play in the 12-6 o'clock positions(without loosening the lug nuts)

also, does it vibrate when braking from those speeds? make sure your rotors aren't warped

I'd rather like to know what kind of hell that previous owner put those wheels through to make them look like that Mine look absolutely pristine compared to those...and yes, I have 16-inch wheels (can't wait to get my I35's on)

That's easy. A women use to drive this car. If I don't buy tires with wheel lip protection on them, this is what the wheels on my girls i30 would look like. Tires are covered in curb rash. They just love to hug the curbs.

Now that that is out of the way ....

Let's focus on the problem at hand, vibration.

Wheels look culprit, also, if you've only had it for a short time, I'm sure the suspension components, bushings, etc. could use an overhaul.

Shaking at a particular speed can be caused by one of many things: wheel balance, bad tire, bent wheel, suspension components, busings, rotors, and on and on...

Probably the best thing to do is take it to a tire & alignment shop and have them diagnose it for you. Seems like you just went to a tire shop - they might be willing to inspect it for you as a courtesy or a modest charge.

... and can be very dangerous at higher speeds. Definitely fix that first!
