What is this bolted to the motor?
What is this bolted to the motor?
I'm trying to help a lady that was hit by someone running a light. She has a '01 Maxima and I replaced the accessory belt pully and bracket for her.
When I was installing the bolts on the bottom of the bracket, I seen wires hanging from the bottom of the motor behind the passenger side wheel. When I took a closer look, I noticed that the wires that was connected to some sensor that is bolted on the block. It just to the right of the oil filter and under the crank. It has 2 bolts going in it and a wire plug on the foward side. Please let me know what this is.

Here is the pic. Take with phone, send to e-mail, download e-mail, save on computer, edit pic, upload to website, come here to add pic. I guess I should have done it before you asked.

My guess would have been a knock sensor but she said that she has to feather the gas pedal to keep the car running now.

How is the car even starting with that disconnecting? Do you think that's why it wont idle?
Thanks a lot. I do appreciate your help. That goes for everyone.

Yes the wires are torn apart. It even looks like part of the wires are missing. I seen one at the junk yard so I'll go cut that one off and splice them together on this one.
The lady said that somone ran a stop sign and hit her. But I don't see any other car paint on her's so I think she may have run her car up on a curb and hit something herself. IDK, just can't see why those wires would have been torn loose.
Dang car tossed the accessory belt again. All pullies are spinning freely. My guess is that the alternator is cocked (from the accident) or something causing the belt to break.
I did scan for codes and got a P1335. I guess that's the crank sensor that not plugged in.

Round 2 with this Maxi...
Huh? I think the wires were torn apart as a result of an accident. It looks like the car was run over a curb and into a tree or something.
Besides that, the lady had been driving the car like that since 3/1/12. That's her story anyway. Well, what got us connected was she lost her accessory belt and her brother tried to install one and stripped her idler pully bolt. When I got to it, it was binding so I though the bracket was bent causing it to bind. I got one from a junk yard and installed it for her.
Well, a few days later she said the car will no longer start and run. Now she was driving it on the battery and it was running rough so I thought maybe the wires to that crank sensor was causing it to run rough and now not start. So I went to the local junk yard and took wires from one there, installed wires and plugged in the connector, and wham, still no start.
So, the 2nd time I tried to start it I did not hear the fuel pump running, you know, when you let the key go the fuel pump will run for 2 to 3 seconds. Nothing. So I try to start it again and still no fuel pump sound. That killed the weak battery.
Now, my new questions??? Is there a easy way to check fuel pumps on these cars? Can you usually hear them when you try to start the car?
Thanks.

our fuel pumps don't just fail. I've never actually ever heard of a maxima fuel pump failing.
Theyr'e insanely easy to get at, just remove the lower rear seat and it's right there.
Again, very highly doubt this is your issue.

I'll charge up the battery and give it another try. The car has 197,000 miles on it but I don't think that's bad for a Maxima. One of my previous neighbors had 330,000 on his '99 Maxi and it still runs well. Has oil getting into #5 plug hole but other than that he's still driving it 50 miles per day.
I'm sure I spliced in new wires to what was there. I cut the wires about 4 inches back from the break and spliced them into the plug from the jy car. Not sure how to test them 100%. Besides that, she claims she was driving the car with those wires broke for 60 days so I doubt that's the issue.
On my car, the fuel rail runs right across the front of the motor and there is a fuel pressure valve stem on the end of it. I can screw a gauge in there and read the pressure. Is there a line or something that I can disconnect to see if there is pressure on the system?

I'd think more likely that the wires were pinched in the accident and only recently fell off.
That, or they were damaged when her brother, you, or whoever was messing around with the belt tensioner, etc.
Or both.
In either case I'd jsut be double checking that before you go chasing any other gremlins.

Here, you need this, read up, everything you'll ever need to know with step by step instructions:

Ok, I'll check that out. Thanks for the link.
When I first seen the car and looked at the missing belt, I looked under the car and seen those wires torn apart. I asked the lady about the wires hanging down and she said they were like that for weeks. So she was driving with the front crank sensor wires torn apart.
