Steering Wheel Question

Kind of an odd question I guess, and mostly out of curiosity; but does the 6th Gen steering wheel work on a 5.5?

I'm quite certain it will bolt to the hub, but I'm curious if it would cause any air-bag/SRS issues, and whether one would be able to retain the steering wheel mounted controls.

Anybody know whether it will work? I may pull one out of the salvage yard and fiddle with it just to see, but I'm curious to see if anyone has done this or knows a Maxima that has this done.

^^x2^^

I'm a week old owner of an '03 and this is one of the first mods I've been wanting to research. I have a friend with an '05 Xterra and really like the way his steering wheel is and how the controls are layed out(exactly like the picture posted).

Definitely try to find out and keep us posted...looking forward to it!

Well, a good friend of mine and former business partner owns two salvage yards here in town, so I may just head out to one of them and grab a steering wheel. The FSM for the 2002 shows the wiring diagram and schematic of the steering wheel controls, so I would just need to get the FSM for the 2004 or 2005, and I should be able to figure out the wiring.

The only thing I'm really worried about is the air bag. I'm slightly scared of air bags (and rightly so), so putting an air bag into the car that wasn't originally intended for it, especially with all the new security and safety technology on cars nowadays, kind of has me hesitant. I want to make sure the thing doesn't blow up in my face unnecessarily.

If this were me, I'd be changing to the Infiniti/Skyline steering wheel. The 6th gen is even bigger than the 5th. And IMO, much uglier.

G35/Skyline wheel:

And for your wiring, you can find them all here:

Yea, see I think it looks better than the factory 5th gen one. And I've got the wiring diagrams and schematics and all that, but I'm just concerned about the airbag/SRS deal. I'm not sure how in depth the SRS system is on these cars. Is it going to blow up in my face as soon as I put some power to it, or will it plug in and work the same as factory, or will it work ok and not blow up, but trip the SRS light?

The wiring I can definitely sort out without much problem, especially as far as the cruise/audio controls are concerned. That's just a matter of matching up the proper wired by looking at each wiring diagram. Do you know if it will cause any airbag issues at all?

Get an FSM for the 6th gen downloaded and see if the wiring has the same impedance to not cause errors?

If it blows, then just put a resistor in there so you won't have the bag light flashing all the time. lol

Someone do this so I can change mine. However which other cars have a heated steering wheel? I wouldn't want to lose that..

The size is incredibly important IMO. The Maxima already has sloppy floaty steering, a bigger wheel makes that worse. The smaller the wheel the quicker the response. Though it will make steering slightly more laboured, but that'll hardly be noticable.

As far as looks, guess that's pure preferance. Personally I'd just never put a bigger wheel in this thing, it's already too big.

Lol. Is it really bigger than the factory one? I figured they'd be a bit smaller, they always felt a bit smaller. What about the G35/G37 steering wheel?

I've been researching the wiring for the 5.5 gen vs the 6th gen and also the 2007-2011 G steering wheel. The cruise control wiring is all the same and should/will plug in or wire in with no issue. The audio controls will be fine as well, but one of the buttons will have to be rewired to act as the TRIP button, since it is non-existent on the 6th gen and the G wheel.

I'm trying to get my car in a proper running state before I change anything trivial like the steering wheel, but I will get around to this eventually. I'm definitely liking the 2007-UP G37 steering wheel. It looks brilliant.

Hmmm, the wheel in my 04 Quest feels smaller than the 5.5. Try to find a wheel from a 05+ Quest - the buttons are back lit. They are a pain to find and feel for in the dark when not back lit.
