3rd gear crunch

O.k so im not aware of this being a problem with the 5MT's... i literally just finished fixing an exhaust leak 15mins ago and now driving i notice ever so random and depending on speed there is a 3rd gear crunch... what could be the cause of that... seems like when i fix one issue and another comes up that has nothing to do with the previous issue

Check if you have the right level of gear oil in the gear box. Make sure you're using GL-4 only gear oil. I had same issue with my 01, but i replaced the gear oil with MT-90 and my issue went away.

Are all of your mounts good?

I have 3rd gear crunch, AMSOIL GL-4 synthetic. poly mounts except the tranny mount. Rebuilt tranny a year ago and my shifter physically moves back and forth with throttle input. Under normal driving, it won't crutch. If I'm at redline at 2nd gear and I go into 3rd....it will crunch.

I'm stumped

My local Nissan Dealership carries Redline products... you could give your Nissan shop a call. Otherwise, here's a link to find retailsers:

http://www.redlineoil.com/dealers.aspx

Also, read up on Redline MT-85. It's a newer mix than MT-90, and I much preferred it over the MT-90 in my old Max.

Also, you probably already know this, but the more you secure your engine from movement, the smoother the shifting is.

Can't you get Redline from Autozone or Oreilly? I vaguely remember picking up some MT90 from Autozone a few years ago.

IIRC, you need something less than 3 quarts... 2.6 comes to mind. I'm sure it's in the owner's manual.

And yeah, it's expensive stuff.

140 weight is a little too heavy I think, but I can't really say anything negative about Royal Purple. Here's the proper weight in Royal Purple:

Depending on where in the country you are, there is bound to be a shop somewhere near you that sells redline. Redline is usually cheaper than Royal Purple, and IMO it's better too.

^That place is near Baltimore. Not sure how close you are, but there are 7 different shops within 50 miles of Baltimore.

Mine crunches if I downshift unless I rev match it perfectly.

You can get gl4 from Napa. It's in a white 4 quart bottle with a teal/green lable if I'm not mistaken.

Order MT-85 and bleed the fauk out of your clutch and it should take care of it. It took the 3rd gear crunch out of my 5/5 permanently. I put it in my 5 speed AE trans i have now and it shifts like butter even with bad motor mounts. Its worth the money and the wait trust me. I test muled a bunch of gear oils in my 5/5 already. Hope this helps Hustle

I have the redline shockproof in my trans, previous owner had it put in when shop did the clutch. I was confused when I first seen it since it's a minty color. Maybe you should try it, lots have had good results with it. I still crunch sometimes though but for a 20 year old trans and one thats known for crunching in almost every gear, its pretty damn guuuddd.
