Beaten by a VW Beetle??

From a dead stop at a light, I mash the accelerator against a new model VW Beetle. No big exhaust, no loud rumble, nothing to indicate that it was anything but a regular VW beetle... But it kicks my a$$ down the street. I don't think it was a turbo because he or she (I didn't check to see who was driving) kept up with me off the line, then pulled on me after about 50 feet. Any ideas how he beat me?

You have got to be kidding!?!? Man, he must feel real good about himself right about now. A co-worker has a turbo bug, I never took him seriously when we left work at the same time. I know I would take it though. Cannot believe we're talking about THE BUG

Coulda been a VR6,or Nos.I drove a turbo bug,150hp slow. The new turbo is said to be 180hp,I'm sure the car weighs a bit less.Shoulda bought a manual trans, bro.

I read an article on a bug done up in Japan with like 420hp or something. I was obviously drivetrain modified as well, but it shows the potential. Ya just never know whats under the lid!

It took me some effort to beat a dude in his Bug on a freeway...I'd say the ones w/turbo M/T are pretty fast.

Haven't heard of a VR6 model of the VW Bug, think that's Jetta specific. I checked the specs on the VW Bug and you're right, the top line turbo has 180HP. I don't think we were really racing, ie we weren't revving and nodding at each other. I noticed the bug taking off from lights pretty quickly, so when I pulled up next to him, I decided to show him some real power. I don't think having a manual would have helped. I noticed my rev meter as I hit 6300 RPM in first gear. As my car went to second gear, he was still pulling away a little. I let up at about 50mph since it was a 35mph street where a lot of cops roam. I guess I also gave up because the Beetle was about 10 meters ahead of me by then. Again, I didn't hear a roar or notice a sudden boost in power like I'd guess you'd see from a turbo or NOS.

Putting a VR6 in a bug has been done. Also manual trans will beat an auto in your Max guarenteed.

I didn't notice any shift lag, so I think it was an automatic. He wasn't shifting hard, just mashing the accelerator.

I love my Maxima, but this is one reason I plan to trade it in for the 350Z this summer.

VW is planning on selling a 320hp AWD Beetle in Europe. They made a prototype one with the Porsche AWD (out of the 911TT) and a blown VR6. Hell someone put the Porsche 911TT engine in the Beetle too.

I'm gonna buy an old school Beetle one day, make it look just like Herbie!

A friend of mine installed a VR6 Turbo in a 98 Bug a few years back in Vancouver, BC. They reworked the front end to fit in the intercooler. The car is sick fast to say the least!

Seems odd that a stock 2.0 bug would beat you though. Musta been a turbo, or even a chipped turbo. How fast did you guys get up to? If he had the jump and it was only to 50-60mph it is totally believable.
Top speed I had my 2.0 bug was 200KM/hr.

I had one of the first 5000 of the New Bugs when they came out in spring of 98. They are aren't bad to 50mph especially for such a low HP car. I raced a V6 Accord a few times as well as new body Acura TL and they only beat me by a car length by the time I was at the top of second with even starts. The bug is very easy to launch fast.

I shut it down at 50MPH because it was a street where a lot of cops drive around. He was still zipping away as my passengers were laughing at my pathetic performance.

This is one of the reasons I'm seriously considering trading my 2K Maxima in for a 350Z this summer or fall.

That is kinda weird, but like someone else said, you never know what he/she is packing under the hood. You gotta wonder how some of the older Mustang GT owners feel when they get beat by a "stock" automatic Maxima. They do have turboed versions too, and VW has quite a plethora of aftermarket goodies to choose from.

I don't know how that happened, enless the beetle had a Nitrous, or a turbo. Maybe even a VR6 engine swap. Don't really know, but that must have been depressing.

i read about a bug with a twin-turboed VR6, six speed gearbox, and 4motion all wheel drive system......no shame in losing if thats who you met....

This bug would have beat pretty much any stock 2K-2K1 Maxima.

I raced my friends stock auto bug on the freeway in my stock 93 sentra. We were pretty much even. I had 4 people in my car and he had 3 in his. So it had to have some mods or it was turbo.

Damn... ever since I got beaten by that "Mr. Softee" ice cream truck, things just haven't been the same for me and my 2k max.....

J/K

A Bug? stock!?!?!??? Are you serious? Please say it ain't so! Wait until the acura guys hear about this one! oh dear... Did you per chance have your ebrake on?!?

-Tom Z.

PS. There was an ultimate sleeper bug custom modded by some canadian company, featured in one of the car mags a few months ago... I think it was something like 400+ hp, but that was after a full engine swap tho... If I remember correctly, it only cost somewhere in the vicinity of $60 grand or so (total). Sorry i'm so vague, but I don't remember the specifics (nor even which mag I saw it in)

Its plausible. A stock Beetle Turbo with 150hp & 5spd will run mid to high 7s 0-60. A stock 2000-2001 Maxima Auto will run 7.8 so I could see one beating you.
I usually run this guy from work on the highway who has a Turbo Beetle 5spd and I always beat him by a few car lenghts. I've never raced him off the line, but I'm sure I would smoke him.

if you know how to launch a 2k-2k1 max you could get low 7's,like 7.3 or 7.4 but seirously them bettles 1.8T....its enough the guy puts a chip and he has you...those cars weigh less then me and with that 180hp stock engine 5sp, don't be mad...forget it and move on...i know sometimes it ****es you off, so get something faster if it will make you feel better...lol

Bad = losing to a Bug!
