3.5" Speakers in Rear Deck
3.5" Speakers in Rear Deck
So I tried to search to see if anyone has done this before, but couldn't find anything. I'm hoping this isn't a repost.
Just wanted to let everyone know a little easy to do mod to give your stereo a new dimension. So, I took out the rear seat belts (I rarely have people in the back seat, and if I do TOUGH! no seatbelts for you!) to improve sound quality and eventually refinish the deck liner with some good quality material. I was left with 3 large holes where the seatbelt anchors were and was going to try modifying to fit some 5.25" speakers but decided it wasn't worth the hassle.
Solution: I bought some Infinity Kappa 32.9cf 3.5" 2 ways (2 ohm), and hooked them right into where the bolts for the anchors lined up, with a washer for the rear bolt and presto, now pushing 1 front component system, 1 rear 2 way, and the 3.5" in the deck. It really brightened up sound quality, and bridged the gap between the mids and highs very nicely. I don't have pics, but once you have the deck off and the seatbelts out, it's pretty self-explanatory on the install.
Why: This was an easy option for me, because my door speakers are externally amplified and prior to install my head unit's 4 output channels were unused. So, I wired the 2 sets of door speakers in parallel to the front channels of my 4 channel mrp-f600 off the front channel on the HU. Wired the rear channels to an 8" Infinity sub mounted into the deck in a custom built box by me, off of the subwoofer channel. And wired my 3.5" deck speakers to the rear channel off the HU, to control crossover from the deck. Easy to tune and replacing to stock is a piece of cake. I hope this gives some ideas for any audiophiles out there.

AznRyan: Nice! Did you put any sound suppression material on the rear deck?An inexpensive way to clean up the sound (inexpensive as long as you do it yourself)
fishtale6spd: When you had all of this apart was there any room for some 6x9's? I'm willing to do some cut and fabing to get them to fit
This was also my first choice, but I don't have the heart to tear that deck apart to make it work. 6x9s could definitely fit in this area, with some pretty intense cutting and fabbing. A few problems from this. The deck is very irregular all over, so you would need a mounting board for the speaker itself and then some sort of caulking for the gaps between the board and the deck. You would definitely need soundproofing. 6x9s could fit sideways, but it looks like it would have worked out a little better at a 45* angle. If you have the will and the tools, 6x9s in the deck could make for a pretty badass setup! My only holdup was I don't have anything that could cut through that deck with any sort of ease.
Long story short, I went with the easy 3.5" speaker install which took around 15 minutes, instead of the hours of cutting and headaches. In the future, I will have 6x9s mounted in the rear door speaker locations which I think is a better location, especially with close to 300 watts rms being sent to the pair. This spot would take alot less effort to make them fit, with 6.5" openings already. IIRC, that one should be able to be accomplished with slight cutting and a mounting ring for the 6x9.
Haha as you can see, I've considered quite a few options and I love loud music
Ok just popped the trunk and peeked again. How about cut a big square hole. Then build custom mini boxes for the
6x9's then lay a 3/4" mdf board just over the hole with the mounting hole for the 6x9 cut Into it would that work then cut the top cover to fit the grills over it to make it all flush? Is this achievable?
