Paint & Body Experts! What is this junk and how do I get it off?
Paint & Body Experts! What is this junk and how do I get it off?
Hi guys,
I've had my car for a little over 2 years now and bought it with the paint in pretty bad condition.
I just took it for what it was and never planned to do anything about the paint since I couldn't justify spending a thousand or more dollars on a paint job when the car could have used some work on having it run better.
This is what it looks like:

I've seen clear coat peeling before and this definitely doesn't look like what I've seen. Someone pointed out to me that if I start rubbing on it with my finger, I was able to remove some of it.
The portion where it meets the paint and has been exposed that way for longer was easier to rub off (the border of the paint to the weird gritty stuff) than the parts that are further down. In those imagines, the parts closer to the trunk or rear windshield were pretty easy to rub off but my progress slowed down significantly as I tried to rub off more.
Would anyone be able to identify what it is and hopefully an easy way to get it off? I do notice that after I rub it off, the bottom is more dull compared to parts that were never covered in the stuff so I might look into putting a layer of clear coat on it if I am able to get this junk off.
Here are a few close ups:

No, not really. It's just gonna flake off like dandruff. Messing with it will just make it look worse. I'd leave it alone until you get the car repainted. It will cost some money to have it done properly at a reputable body shop that will do a base/clear paint job, and have it look right.
it looks like the clear coat is gone and the base coat is starting to flake, I could be wrong but one of the pic also seems like there was previous body work done and you can see some of the sanding marks underneath, either bondo or primer.
