Error codes left and right!

Hi all, the vehicle in question here is a 2000 Nissan Maxima GLE. Just recently I took my vehicle to "autozone" to check out the reason why the "service engine soon" light was showing up.

After an engine diagnostic test 6 error codes appeared.

1: P1320 Ignition Signal Primary
2: P0160 NO2S Activity Bank 2
3: P0420 Catalyst Efficiency Low Bank 1
4: P0159 02 Signal Slow Bank 2
5: P0158 02 Signal High Bank 2
6: P0505 Idle Control System Malfunction

Any suggestions on where to start with these problems?

Check out the FSM and follow the procedures listed for each DTC.

Would be helpful to know the Maxima year in order to look at the right FSM.

I had 6 trouble codes when I first bought my max, mostly O2 sensors, your #1, and a P0430. With the help of the org and the FSM I got rid of them all one by one, in about 8 months(didn't have funds to do it all at once). You have a lot of work to do, luckily most of it you can do yourself if you just search and read on how to perform the work. good luck

Update

Since my last post, I installed an 02 sensor, air valve sensor, replaced the faulty catalyzer, and have since replaced 3/6 coils. I still have a p1320 error code and we are looking for an ignition coil capacitor/condenser. Does anyone have an idea how much these go for and where I can purchase one?

(Have spent around $1500 for the bugs)

If you spent $1,500 for the 3 front coil packs, a new idle air control valve, new catalytic converter, and an o2 sensor you need to turn in your man card or at the least run away from that mechanic.

Checked your plugs?

The p1320 can be difficult to track down, but if you paid that much for that little you got taken for a ride IMHO.

Check rockauto.com for parts and use this site the way I think it should be; to learn how to do it yourself, do it right, and save lots of money.

The cat and o2 sensors can be something for a shop if they are stubborn because exhaust can be..but the other stuff is an FSM or an ask away if you didn't find the answer searching.

I understand what you are saying Frankie, but the most expensive part was the CAT as it had to be bought from the dealership due to strict regulations in CA. Nevertheless, thank you for your advice. Being a full time student (age 21), I do not have the time to delve into the world of vehicles and so I only do so to fix the issues that crop up.

I've learned many things trying to fix this car and for that, I get to keep my man card!

I'm staying away from California.
Those emissions scare me.

I think I've found the part that I am looking for called "ignition condenser" which is part "#28351-89901" for a 2000 Nissan Maxima. According to Connell Nissan in Costa Mesa, CA the part is around $6.

Good point indeed. I've been purchasing the coils from AutoZone (links below).

Are these considered OEM or better?

Well I currently have 2 duralast coils and they work fantastically and throw no codes. I was worried when I had to replace one as to whether or not the duralast would throw a code. I put it in and it ran 100x better. Before putting the cover back on I then noticed the previous owner had a duralast one put in as well and it had a date written on it in sharpie indicating that the coil was put in close to four years ago.. so as far as im concerned not all aftermarket coils are problematic

Thank you for your input. I was beginning to worry extremely about the coils (2 Duralast) that I recently installed on my Maxima. I am still battling the 1320 code. Today I was able to replace the ignition coil condenser (part #28351-89901) located in the harness leading to the front 3 coil packs, but the service engine light re-appeared after turning the engine back on after 13 miles of driving. It appears that the next thing is to replace the old coils (3 of them). Any other suggestions?

....

However, I do see many around the interwebz claim that non-OEM coils throw out the 1320 code until replaced with OEM coils.

PS: I am glad you chuckled and rolled Frankie

Update (CEL fixed...)

It's been about 60 miles since I've installed 6-Hitachi (OEM) ignition coils on my 2k nissan maxima and the CEL (p1320) has not reappeared after clearing it. I'd like to claim that my issue is now fixed, and the way to go is OEM! (ty Frankie)

OEM coils save the day again. Always nice to hear that a problem, or slew of problems, is worked so the Maxima can be enjoyed like it should. Good work, and good attitude as well. Lol
