6 speed trans help

So my trans has not been catching gears under moderate to hard acceleration. Thinking it was a flywheel, I pulled the trans out and apart and discovered that the clutch and inside the bell housing was covered with a sludge or grease.

I am thinking there is a seal or O ring from the crank- it is the only area that can leak into the trans(that I can see). That crank has a little too much play and can jiggle more than I think it should.

The clutch was coated and ruined from this oil/grease/sludge that was almost "baked" on it like, with a consistancy of asphalt or tar.

Taking it to a trans shop today and will hopefully find the issue today or tomorrow.

Any ideas or has anyone else ever had this issue???

Edit- there has been a strange chatter sound from the trans for some months before- I am thinking it is the extra play, or wiggle, in the shaft coming out of the trans. And it would kick me out of 6th gear when I accelerated.

Does it smell like oil or trans oil? could be your output shaft seal on the trans or your remain behind the flywheel

Thanks for giving an opinion...

No strong oil smell, it has a sludge consistency- I am hoping the seal failed- if not I may be trans shopping >.< I should know the status tonight or tomorrow morning.

Honestly after fixing this, I may sell the Max. It will be in top running condition with the mods and only some small cosmetic issues(dings, scratches, etc). I may need the money- So someone may get a great deal.

Can you check for tranny codes in a 5th gen? That looks a lot more like oil as opposed to tranny fluid. Should just be a seal and hopefully you caught it in time. I imagine it couldn't grab any gears at high speeds because that sludge would make it slip.

I thought the "trans fluid" in a manual WAS gear oil...

I think they call it gear lube technically. Either its terribly broken down or something else. Shouldnt sludge like that under any conditions really

update- the inner bearing was shot and now they are getting into the gears/synchros and I think the 6th gear synchro will be shot.

Edit update- synchros good, both sets of bearings are shot. I'm looking at 2k+ for all the parts/ work (trans, flywheel, clutch, etc) >.<

107k

Looking over $2k in repairs- now I am having trouble finding an Exedy clutch, not the kit- just the clutch disc. Does anyone know if Nissan clutch disc will bolt up to the rest of the Exedy clutch kit(pressure plate & throw out)?

As I mentioned in your other thread, I installed an Exedy OEM on my car recently, and the throwout bearing from the kit was the exact same part number and manufacturer as the TO bearing I bought from the dealership. The OEM clutch and PP I removed also appeared to be identical to the Exedy parts.
