The MPG icon on the dash
You're better off keeping track of your mileage on a per tank basis...(reset trip counter at fill up...pay attention to how many miles you went when you fill up again and divide by # of gallons)
I tested the accuracy of my dashboard mpg counter. Twice, actually. It's somewhat accurate, but it's definitely not perfect. It fluctuates around a lot due to all the variables it calculates to achieve it's decided number. When I tested it, it said I was getting 29.8, but according to my math after filling up I was actually getting 29.2 or something like that. I have it written on the receipt, I just can't be bothered to go get it.
In any case, it's not so inaccurate that it will give you a completely outlandish number, but it's definitely not pinpoint. It's best used as a motivator to lighten the load on the pedal on the right a bit, in my opinion.
