Horrible gas mileage...squealing brakes post rotor/brake job..help !

So in the past two weeks....my gas mileage has dropped to 297 miles and the light comes on......this is horrible. I only put premium 93 octane in the car as well. Everything has been changed (plugs, oil, air filter etc) and its dropped so low !

Also, i think my caliper maybe failing. I just changed my brakes and rotors on the front. Driver side is fine, but my passenger side squeals loudly at low speed braking.

Any ideas on both ? The car has been driving a bit hard too, and seems like it struggles to go 60 mph at times. I think the front right brake maybe stuck and slowing it down.....just a theory.

Thanks

I've been thinking the same thing about mine as well. Gas mileage is a little lower than I'd like. I've got a squeal on low speed braking and sometimes it feels like I have to give it a lot of throttle to get a decent speed when pulling away. Also, when I let off the gas while cruising it feels like I'm decelerating a lot faster than I should be.

I've just been too lazy to actually do the brake job though. I hate doing calipers, I suck @ bleeding brakes.

Drive around the block trying to use your brakes as sparingly as possible...when you get back, carefully see if any of the rotors are hot. If a caliper is stuck then the rotor will generate enough warmth.

^^^ this, and if you have an infrared thermometer, it makes the diagnosis that much easier and more accurate. point it at each caliper and rotor and see if one is hotter than the rest

Pertaining to gas mileage, have you replaced the MAF or any O2 sensors? If O2 sensors start going, gas mileage goes straight to the underworld....

^^ Let him settle out the stuck caliper portion of the issue first...it could be the cause of lower mpg (using more gas just to 'go')

True. If he's dragging, he might as well be hauling a boat around behind it....

I've always wanted one of those and now I finally have an excuse to buy one.

keep in mind, too, that many stations are beginning to switch to their "winter blend" gases, which don't give as much MPG as the summer blends...

Have not replaced MAF. Cleaned it once.

Replaced All 02 sensors with OEM.

I will check my MAF again

I think it has to be the caliper, the autozone guy said when i brought my brakes in that one of my calipers had to be shot.

As far as checking to see if it's hot those things generate a ton of heat. When I was like 16 I thought I had one frozen up on my Integra. When I told my Pop's he said "go see if it's hot" so I did and my thumb print showed up very nicely on that rotor. If you don't have any fancy tools at least wet your finger before you touch it or just flick some water at it and wait to hear tsssssssssss...granted I wasn't the smartest kid in the world...

This is true, during summer months I have gotten up to 28 mpg(70% highway/30% city), but during the winter I feel like im driving an mid size SUV(drops to 21-23mpg)
