2003 Maxima GLE/ New owner

I have the opportunity to buy a 78k GLE Everything works except the bose sub, I've already looked and found the fix for it. I've read about the mysterious secondary intake butterfly screw. The rear struts seemed soft, but not blown persay. I have a couple questions for the daily driver owners here.

1. Are the brakes supposed to be softer..? ( I owned a saturn Sl2 with a harder pedal, granted no ABS on the saturn)

2. Mechanically what fails at 100k?

3. Pearl White, how hard is it to get repainted and whats the typical pricing for it?

AFAIK It has the original HID bulbs and ballasts.

4. It had an aftermarket remote start/alarm system installed inline with the Nissan immobilizer, Light on the dash by the clock is stock, one by the wheel isn't, Under the hood it also says it was equipped with one, Leave it or revert it back to stock?

It doesn't appear to burn or leak any oil, I'm accustomed to that, So I'll monitor it. No visible frame rust, just minor surface rust, a little clean up and a recoat is fine.Air is cold actuator doors work, Heat is hot.

5. What is a typical owners price per year in repairs or cost of ownership?

I see that everybody is getting about 24-26 MPG, Typically Normal?

It doesn't have TCS, no frills BASIC GLE. Only thing im a bit unhappy with is paint quality on the bumper, clear is gone on the bump trim and allowed mold to grow.

Pics below.

Typical Chalky Salt covered block.

I want to thank anyone ahead of time who replies and helps me out.. Dealer was asking 8000. I bumped it all down to 5500.

Sorry If it's not correct section. Thanks.

Nice buy and good job talking them down.

1. Are the brakes supposed to be softer..? ( I owned a saturn Sl2 with a harder pedal, granted no ABS on the saturn)
The brakes are a little softer than some other cars I've driven...just as long as you're able to stop safely I wouldn't worry about it.

2. Mechanically what fails at 100k?
Radiator could start leaking at the top. Motor mounts could be worn. Suspension pieces. Full tune-up needed. Not sure anything else.

3. Pearl White, how hard is it to get repainted and whats the typical pricing for it?
The pearl white is probably most expensive out of the colors, mainly because Nissan applied 2-3 coats. I believe all other colors was just 1 coat of color.

4. It had an aftermarket remote start/alarm system installed inline with the Nissan immobilizer, Light on the dash by the clock is stock, one by the wheel isn't, Under the hood it also says it was equipped with one, Leave it or revert it back to stock?
If the aftermarket works fine then leave it.

5. What is a typical owners price per year in repairs or cost of ownership?
I haven't experienced much in cost but I do a lot on my own.

I see that everybody is getting about 24-26 MPG, Typically Normal?
That is about normal...I get worse but I have a lead foot.

It doesn't have TCS, no frills BASIC GLE. Only thing im a bit unhappy with is paint quality on the bumper, clear is gone on the bump trim and allowed mold to grow.
The 'trim' you have on your bumper isn't OEM, not that I know of at least...

My D.D. is an '03 SE and I love her more every day! Congrats on finding one that's only got 78k on it!

1. Are the brakes supposed to be softer..? ( I owned a saturn Sl2 with a harder pedal, granted no ABS on the saturn)
First couple inches of travel is pretty soft, should firm up closer to the bottom. As long as it stops before you hear crunch you're good. Get it up to about 30 and stomp 'em, I bet your head hurts afterwards! Hahaha!

2. Mechanically what fails at 100k?
I'm at 112k, I've done power steering pump, rear wheel bearings and the infamous radiator was done last month. On my agenda for the winter is CV's, FSB Bushings & End Links and Tie Rod Ends. Other than that it's oil changes, brakes, tires and the norm.

3. Pearl White, how hard is it to get repainted and whats the typical pricing for it?
No idea, paint's not my thing. Try clay barring it and a good waxing, may bring it back, at least somewhat.

I agree with the post above, if it ain't broke ya know...

5. What is a typical owners price per year in repairs or cost of ownership?
I also turn my own wrenches, parts aren't too bad like alot of other "foreign" cars. With 93 Octane and Full Syn it's a little higher than some cars but also alot more fun to drive!

I see that everybody is getting about 24-26 MPG, Typically Normal?
In the City that's about right, I've gotten as high as 29.8 on a trip.

It doesn't have TCS, no frills BASIC GLE. Only thing im a bit unhappy with is paint quality on the bumper, clear is gone on the bump trim and allowed mold to grow.
Rip that trim off, it's not original and IMO it takes away from the lines of the front end. I'd be careful though or you may need paint sooner than later, there should be a thread around here somewhere about removing residue after a debadging, five the SEARCH a shot, should work for that too.

That's what I would think. Though depending on how long it's been on there you might have noticeable paint fade...and the glue might be 'too stuck' requiring new paint regardless.

Should I ask the dealer if they can remove it at their paint shop? As it is, Once it's in my possession its getting a full claybar and wax treatment. That trim sticks out and makes it look back.

Either they do it for free or you do it for free. Would probably take some good heat and use fishing line to go underneath the trim.

FWIW, there aren't any holes or anything that should prevent the trim from coming off...just glue

Fishing line is a hell of an idea! I'd never have thought of that...

Welcome to the exclusive GP club.

Paint is a be-yotch. It’s a 3 stage paint: paint->pearl-> clear. Matching and blending is tough. My poor girl has been in a few accidents (not my fault) and I’ve taken her to high quality shops that were able to match and blend perfectly.
If you do notice some oil burning try running Castrol 10w40 – my car does really well with it.

not the best pics, but gives you an idea of some cheap mods you can do.

don't mind the dirt...

My first set of things is to get the bose working again.
Second is clears, sidemarkers and front turn marker
LED bulbs, and thats about it, The dealer I'm getting it from has a "factory" warranty, Idk if it covered B2B. I noticed the rear left window was a bit slow, might be the dealer info papers.. If its not Then boom fix before I pick it up, I'm pretty sure I can get the dealer to get the trim off, I'm paying cash in full. I cant believe I was able to talk them from 7985.00 to 5500. Then 6073.00$ total tax tag title dealer. So Great deal.

Well Nevermind, Dealer told me 5500. Then told me the out the door price was more than i was told, they wanted 400$ more, but because it wasnt confirmed. I walked. It was on a sale as a false ad, then they wouldnt honor the pricing, and they let it go from me CASH for 400$ difference. .

I and nobody else would pay 9000. For a 2003 Maxima.

Thanks anyways, If I find another I'll let you all know.
