Catback Exhaust choices on a 2000 SE

Hey guys,

I wanted to put a catback exhaust system in my 2000 SE 5speed. It already has an Injen CAI so I just had a few questions.

Whats an inexpensive but quality brand?

Will it be too loud combined with my CAI?

How much horsepower should I expect to gain?

Any info is appreciated thanks!!

Throw the Injen in the trash....Your engine will outflow that INJEN intake!

If you're concerned about noise, there's not really any available exhaust that suit you. Unless you buy that SRS exhaust and put a different OEM style muffler on it.

Yeah get a inexpensive catback and use the factory rear muffler to quiet things down!

I have the watermelon launcher SRS catback. Its BIG but I like how it sounds. I might switch it off to the other muffler later on when I have extra cash laying around.

I bought it for $165 shipped here in the org and it was fairly new when I got it.

It would be perfect fitment if the hangers were about half an inch bent. It touches my bumper so I have to get those bent out so I can lower my muffler a little bit. Around 1.8k RPM's, it rattles my bumper a little but cruising it at 2k 60MPH, It sounds pretty quiet nothing rather annoying. SRS did a great job with these catbacks and its full stainless steel. I was impressed when I compared the OEM exhaust to the SRS. The weight difference is significant

I was worried about the bumper noise but it didn't happen the problem was the hanger one couldn't connect so that's why it's tilted eventually I'll get the time to figure it out lol and idk about the gaskets but I ran into a problem. One was too big so my mechanic cut it down to fit it and it rattles a bit which doesn't bother me as much until I get it fixed

Although I had to run around without a muffler on since I have to take down the whole suspension in order to connect it. I can tell you That the SRS catback exhaust really stands up for it's quality I drove on the highway once coming home had the muffler on as decoy and with some zip ties (my fault driving a little fast and not careful) the muffler fell straight to the floor I pulled over put it back up and some scratches but no major damage lol I was glad it wasn't ripped apart bent or anything

Yeah they're pretty neat. I had a Sheriff run behind me and I could have sworn he was gonna pull me over but didn't. That's what I like.. at cruising speeds / normal driving, its not annoyingly loud / or a burn to cops

he probably look and thanked it wasn't a fart can but an actual exhaust lol but joking a side it's actually pretty quiet and only loud when you need it and still keeps that sleeper presence on check

Has anyone tried the SRS exhaust system with a Y pipe? I just installed my Y pipe and am now looking for a new CAT back exhaust.

Yes. There's no way around it....... your best bet is to search. There are several threads with excellent sound clips. Searching is your best option to locate several different clips with some different setups and VQ30 vs 35. Google is another good option as it will typically take you right to the clips you want from YouTube, which is where a lot of the sound clips/videos get posted.

OP here, I eventually took the advice from this thread and grabbed an SRS catback. I then threw on a Warpspeed Y. You can definitely feel the HP gain and it is MUCH louder with the Ypipe on.

My friends call my max the rumble wagon, it sounds like a truck. I love it

I have just the Y pipe right now, and it sounds like a diesel, also in reverse the pipe bangs around a lot. Have you had this problem?

Sounds like something is broken or they left a mount off.

I was wondering if the single exhaust hanger that came with the pipe, is installed in the wrong spot? The hanger is right at the end of the Y pipe, just before the main cat.

I don't have this issue with my Y. Sounds like something might be up with it.

I remember when they installed my Y they actually had to cut about an inch off it to make it fit, it was pushed back too far and the hangers werent hanging straight down causing some strange noises.

Check and see if youve got this issue too by looking at your back wheels and whether or not the hangers are hanging vertically or if theyre hanging on an angle

I have SRS with headers and it has a great sound but it is loud. The 2k-2.5k drone is obnoxious but you get used to it. It does have a very nice rev-down burble and does sound very sporty & aggressive.

Here is a vid

(take in mind i have the 3.5)

I'll take a look at the hangers in the rear of the car later on. I do know that the exhaust from the cat back, was pretty free moving, like we were able to move in side to side, we had to move the cat a little so that we could get the Y pipe to line up with the flange on the downpipe. Nothing looked broken, I might just need to add more mounts.

Is this the catback system everyone has been talking about?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/00-MAXIMA-SR...3f58e6&vxp=mtr

If so, does it matter that my car is California emissions?

I got the SR*S with dual tips(no potato launcher).

The quality of it was very good, welds looked exceptional. Who knew a 12 year old Chinese kid could weld so well. I did have to use hose clamps to keep it from jogging around too much. Be sure to use hose clamps with a thick band. Mine are standard and i have to refasten them about once every other month.

Or what about this one.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/00-01-02-03-...2f1b4f&vxp=mtr

It's a little cheaper, but aren't they all really the same?

All are NOT the same- you usually get what you pay for.

Just get a Megan or SRS sytem, if you don't like the acoustics- you can change mufflers or resonators and still spend less than a high dollar exhaust.

This is why I asked that question. I wasn't sure if it was the same company making the same product, and then just selling it to middleman, who then in turn, put their own name and label on it, and charge different prices.

Would it really surprise you though?

Good thread for me to find since my muffler fell off my 2000 5 speed today To make a bad day worse, I pulled in to my parking space today instead if backing in like I usually do because the muffler was still hanging. My girlfriend opened the door and wind took it and dented/scratched my neighbor's car. Never would have happened if my muffler wasn't hanging! I had an aftermarket muffler on that came with the car, it was a tad louder than my taste but it sounded decent, not like all those dirt bike sounding Hondas. I would prefer it a little quieter under normal driving but would like to hear it when I open it up. Performance would be nice but quality/budget friendly would be my preference. Not sure if I need cat back or not, I have to crawl under the car tomorrow and see what the exhaust pipe looks like.

Buy a warpspeed test pipe for $50. Buy a cheap ebay catback for roughly 150....sell the axle back fart can on craigslist....install B-pipes...keep stock muffler. Sound like a G35.
