A Little (detail/repair) Help From My Friends

So, today at lunch someone swiped my bumper while I was in grabbing a sub. It left a nice gouge in the paint, right down to the plastic (luckily no real damage). Anyways, I'm going to try and fix it myself - worst case scenario I bring it to the body shop which I'd be doing anyways.

For all the Canadians/Ontarians/Torontonians out there, any recommendations on a place to go for supplies? seems Canadian Tire only has wetsand up to 600grit, i'm looking for 1000/1500/3000 grit. also, any recommendations for products, eg. build up primer, clear coat, etc from anyone who's done this before? I'll post some pics up later covering the whole "project".

cheers

It is probably better to post this in the Canada regional maxima discussion board or the detail discussion board within Max.org

how deep is the scratch? just paint? into the plastic? use 150 grit till the scratch dissapears if its deeper than the paint, followed by 220-240 to remove the fuzzies, feather out the surrounding paint, buy 1k high build primer (if you have a lordco or napa) then sand with 800 and paint. if its only the paint that is scuffed start with 400, then 600 then 800 , then prime and paint

anything thats a SEM brand or a aresol PPG are good, when and if you base and clear it with aresol, grab a heat gun and dust the base color on holding a heat gun or a hairdryer, aresol cans have soooo much solvent it will pop on ya or wrinkle , when you clear it , u want nice medium wet coats, if you get a few runs in the clear, give it a week and block them out with 1500 then 2000 then polish.

p.s. u really wanna use a DA (dual action sander) make sure if your using a block , sand it in a "x" pattern to avoid big sand scratches, when u prime it, its a good idea to dust some black paint on the primed area so when u sand it, if there are sand scratches you will see them because that black paint will stay in em , then you sand until all the black paint is gone, if you sand through the primer, recoat.( if that makes sense to you, its kinda like a guide coat) plus u wanna let the primer sit for a good day because it does sink especially if your not baking it in a booth. and if u dont wait, after you have painted it, all the imperfections will show through.
